Before I start, just a reminder of my post last week that I am proud of.. some may call it a rant but I just like it! 🙂

ON TO CHOOSE WISELY!

I have written about online challenges before but I wanted to touch base on it again. These challenges can be Facebook, Instagram, Blog posts or any of the many social media platforms.

There are many from food ones to juicing (not my thing) to running or biking or walking, to push-ups and pull-ups & combinations of the two to many calisthenics put together.

NOW LET ME SAY THIS RIGHT UP FRONT – I HAVE NOTHING AGAINST CHALLENGES!!!! 🙂 I just want people to think things thru before they do them.

*Do you even like the food on the food challenge?

*Do you like to drink your food on the juice ones?

*Are you doing it because you really want to do it or because you feel pressured by social media friends?

***ON THE EXERCISE ONES AND THIS WAS MY FOCUS ON THIS POST!***

I personally do not do very many challenges – far & few between – but if I do, I always modify to what is right for me.

I follow a lot of calisthenic people on IG. What they do is AMAZING & they do tend to have a lot of challenges. Here is my point on this post – if you have not been doing a lot of push-ups or pull-ups or any other exercise in any challenge, all of a sudden doing so many a day every day of multiple exercises or even one exercise is a recipe for overuse injury or even worse – a bad injury!

With weight lifting, we are taught not to work the same body part 2 days in a row giving the muscle time to recoup. Why would you do hundreds of reps of 1 or multiple exercises every day in a row just for a challenge UNLESS you are prepared for it, know your body well enough OR you modify so you do not get injured.

I have seen way too many people come back after these or in the middle of one talking of injuries or having to rest due to muscle fatigue or overuse.

Again, nothing wrong with challenges but think it through!

Do you do challenges? Do you modify to make them right for you?

  1. I never do challenges. I never do the same exercise over and over in a row. Love to listen my body. I have goals of course… for example to do muscle up one day… to be strong enough for them and not to be scary of height. Great post Jody, thank you ❤💛❤

  2. I loved it and, if we were to deem it a rant (a word which reminds me of my FAVE Dennis Miller) Id say it was an info-filled PASSIONATE smart one.

  3. I find enough challenges in other parts of life so I don’t need them in the areas you mention 🙂

  4. I have done a few challenges over the holidays. I used it more as a way to stay on track during a time when I overindulge and tend to become sedentary . But, as you pointed out, I workout regularly. It kills me when people who never exercise are suddenly doing 300 squats a day in a challenge. Bad idea on so many levels.

    Great post!
