Muscles – It’s NOT about the Weight, It’s about the Execution; Some Exciting News!

Share

I was in the gym the other day. A guy about 30 years younger than myself was doing some cable triceps pushdowns with a straight bar. I swear I thought he was going to fly off the ground when he executed the release portion of the move & in fact he did a couple of times! He had so much weight that he could not even control the move – his form was crazy bad!  In the picture above, you can see that I have some decent triceps. Yes, I have some genetics for them BUT I worked hard to get them & I work hard to keep them. I use strict form & control.

I am not a person that cares more about HOW MUCH I lift. I care about HOW I lift. I read on social media & Instagram all the time about how this person did a PR  on this move or that move & then they show a video of some crazy a** form. Don’t get me wrong – I think a PR is great if it is executed correctly!

It is all about what our own personal goals are for ourselves. BUT, if a person is writing this yet not happy because they are not meeting personal goals for how they want to look – maybe it is time to evaluate how one is working out.

Even when I was lifting heavy back in my younger years, I still worked to maintain control & strict form. I had patience & consistency as I worked to increase the weight I was lifting without compromising my form OR MY body. Those that get crazy with lifting & don’t use the correct form will end up injured & sometimes to the point of no return. Be safe, be patient, work hard & you will be rewarded with muscles! YES, some of us have better genetics for it but we can all build muscle if we work hard at it!

WORK OUT SMART!!!!

  1. Amen sister on the lifting thing. I see so many bad things going on at the gym. And then there’s the comparing. Ugh.

  2. YES I am so with you on this!!! Form form form. I always just shook my head when I’d see people hoisting and slinging, swaying and rocking trying to get a weight up. At that point, you’re not using the muscle groups intended AND you’re going to hurt yourself. I may talk about PRs but it’s only for running 😉

    1. Heather – yes to your PR in running! 🙂

  3. Hi Jody! I could not agree more about using strict form. I’ve learned to check my ego at the door. It’s ridiculous to try to lift weights that you can’t even handle plus you could really hurt yourself. I see it all the time at my gym. Congratulations on your new opportunity!!

Oh man, I’m with you – I tell people all the time don’t worry about the number on the weight…. and of course I think once people get hung up on it, it becomes a really hard thing NOT to focus on.

  8. Sounds scary! That’s one of the reasons I am not a candidate for Crossfit– with my competitive nature in that atmosphere I would be too tempted to go too fast, use too much weight, etc.

    1. Mary – I am like you. If I had known about Crossfit in my youngers years, I may have done it but not now. 🙂 I am fine doing a few moves here & there.
