Broccoli Marries Kale!

Friday February 17, 2012

Did you see Dr. Oz Monday? I learned something I did not know & Dr. Oz did not know either!!!

Broccolini or Brocollini is the marriage of broccoli & kale. They said broccolini is a hybrid of the two. Well, that is what they said on the show BUT I read this:

Broccolini is a green vegetable similar to broccoli but with smaller florets and longer, thin stalks. Although often misidentified as young broccoli, it is a cross between broccoli and kai-lan, Chinese broccoli. A natural hybrid of the cabbage family Brassica oleracea italica x alboglabra, it was developed by the Sakata Seed Company of Yokohama, Japan, with the name Chinese kale or gai lan. Broccolini's flavor is sweet, with notes of both broccoli and asparagus.

Either way, great for you! Healthy alternative to mix it up!

Here is a recipe for under 300 calories from that show including broccolini:

Oatmeal Grits

Ingredients - Makes 1 serving

1 cup cooked oatmeal

1 cup chicken broth (low sodium)

1/2 tsp hot sauce

3 tbsp grated Parmesan cheese

1/2 cup blanched broccolini

1 cup roasted mushrooms

1/2 tsp minced fresh chives

Directions

Place oatmeal and broth into sauté or sauce pan. Bring mixture to a boil and reduce heat and simmer for 4 minutes until hot and creamy consistency – do not overcook. Add broccolini and blend with oatmeal. Simmer 1 minute and remove from heat.

Add hot sauce, cheese and blend into oatmeal, make sure all cheese is melted. Mound grits into center of the bowl. Roast or sauté mushrooms and arrange over grits and sprinkle chives on top.

Here are a couple more recipes from that show for under 300 calories!

Anyone have a broccolini recipe to share?

I never even heard of broccolini until now. I do know that regular broccoli, which I eat 2-3 times per day, evry day, is in the kale family anyway. I shall search out and find some broccolini this weekend. Thanks for the tip Jody -- sincerely

I knew that because I tried it once and it came in a package that explained. It was okay. But then, I'm not much a fan of veggies.

Mmm...I love to wrap a few sliced of bacon around a bunch (mmm. bacon) or proocuitto ham and then a few sprays of olive oil, pepper and garlic, wrap in foil and cook on the BBQ. Yum. This is good for garlic greens too...which if you ever find in season grab them all up. They are heavenly...
I'm not surprised Dr. Oz got it wrong about the Broccolini...their scientific advisers are...um...lacking.

I've been eating broccolini for years but did not know that it was the marriage of broccoli & kale...I thought it was baby broccoli!

I like the broccolini, but it is expensive so I only buy it on sale. I saute it in coconut oil like I do my regular broccoli!

I love broccolini! But often just buy regular broccoli 'cause it's generally much cheaper. And I'm also confused by the stuff that looks just like broccolini and costs nearly as much, but is labeled "baby broccoli." Anyone know if that's the kale/broccoli hybrid or just high-priced fancy packaged broccoli?
