No Excuses - No "I Can't Resist"

Thursday February 16, 2012

My thoughts about weight loss and a bit of tough love.

A couple things I hear ALL THE TIME:

1. I really can't resist ----- if it is in front of me. For some it is pizza or ice cream or pasta or chocolate (which can be good IN MODERATION if it is the right kind).

Well, honestly - YES, YOU CAN RESIST IT if you make the choice to do that... if you really are willing to meet your weight loss goals.

I know that people can be "addicted" to food. The ingredients in many of them play games with our mind! BUT, I once ate all the crap out there. I ate all those sugar laden sweets - that was "my thing". Loved them & ate them & it was part of our house - Hostess cupcakes & ding dongs & those amazing crumb cakes. I ate cookies & brownies and yes, too much of everything. I loved bread with lost of butter & cinnamon sugar along with Pop Tarts - some of my favorite things.

THEN, I made the CHOICE to stop the insanity, as they say!! We can resist!

Yes, I love my healthy breads & cookies now BUT I don't succumb to them every time they are in front of me. I plan for them & I can have them BUT within reason & moderation.

For those that say I CAN'T RESIST - YOU CAN! It is not that you can never have them again - you just can't have them all the time! If you are one that is not ready yet & needs to stay away from certain foods until you meet your goals, then do that BUT IT IS ALL ABOUT CHOICES & YOU CHOOSE TO EAT IT OR NOT.

2. I HAVE ONLY LOST --- POUNDS & IT IS GOING TOO SLOW. I JUST WANT TO GIVE UP. IT IS NOT FAST ENOUGH.

I just wrote about this HERE in my Why People Quit post. You have to focus on what you have accomplished rather than how far you have to go. You are better off today than you were yesterday or the day before or the week before if you lost or even maintained a weight loss.

As you hear so often, how long did it take to put the weight on.. Yes, it takes some of us years to put on the weight. Others, well, it is easy to eat more than we think so it can come on quicker than we ever thought possible... BUT......

Cold hard facts - it will take a lot longer to come off! BE PATIENT & focus on the accomplishments or even the non scale victories like how much better you feel or it was easier to walk up the stairs or I can breathe better - things like that - YOUR LONG TERM HEALTH!

Another saying we hear often: Change Your Thoughts. Change Your world.

Believe

Change the way you live & change the way you look at things. Make the choice to do that!

Anything sound familiar above? Any personal stories to share?

Well, my blog is my personal story.

I know I set myself up to fail many, many times by believing it would be too hard to change. Of course, that's when I was trying to change everything at once, which was too hard. Too hard for me, anyway. When I broke it up and kept inching toward the bigger goal, it was much, much easier.

I know the "I can't resist" is a bunch of baloney..I can and I have. If I don't, it's because I decide to choose not to.

#2 is one that really is familiar to me. "I've only lost..." I worked with a trainer a couple years back that would really get upset to hear "I only lost.." Yet sometimes, when you've worked so hard say, for a week or two, and you look forward to getting on the scale and then get disheartened to see a smaller loss than anticipated.

I am most definitely better off today. When I look at the big picture, I'm 30 lbs better off! I need to figure out a way to remind myself of that! That's half of my 8 year old daughter.

Julie, I get ya! BUT, the scale is not the end all - clothes can fir better but the scale may read the same. Heck, you may have NSVs & those are great like feeling better & being able to do more... PLUS a small loss is better than none. Maintenance is better than gain. I get ya but it about changing the way a person looks at it...

I think it is all great advice, Jody. But the reality is that for many people, they know what to do and what not to do, it is just doing it that is not so easy.

Karen, that is the point right there - they know SO if a person is not getting the results, no excuses for it.. just get real & acknowledge that. Yes, it is hard but it is all about the choices a person makes - it was hard for me too... for a very long time...

We all want to lose 10 pounds a week like they do on the Biggest Loser. I hate to see people stop because it's not fast enough. They don't seem to relate the fact that they've spent a lifetime getting to where they are and expect to fix it in a matter of days or weeks. Sad.

You sure can kick some butt Jody! I read one time that we crave the foods we eat, so if we eat junk, we crave junk. If we eat healthy foods guess what? We crave more of the same healthy foods.

Is it easy? Of course not - losing weight and keeping it off takes work.

I haven't achieved the how to keep it off for good yet but I keep trying and vow not to give up!

The thought process on it all is easy but yes, the doing is hard - all about choices...

I get frustrated with the slow rate of loss. Especially when I see people lose a lot of weight every week. When I started losing 100 pounds, there were people who started after me that finished before I did. It is so hard to not compare to others on that front.

It is hard Lori but we are all different AND we are all doing it in different ways. Some people may restrict more or less. Some have different body types - you did a great job but I understand the frustration of comparison!

It's about being ready...many people, for many reasons, are not ready. And that's okay. And it's a process of going from not ready, to considering being ready, to sticking a toe in the water of readiness, to being ready...and then there are setbacks and so on and so forth. Understanding that it's a process and not switch that gets flipped is important...it helps people feel that they are normal, and not just fat, lazy slobs who can't control themselves.

Your post recently have been exactly what I need! Your right its about choice and whether you choose to eat that sugar laden food or not, you must be willing to deal with the consequence of choosing it.

I do have to add though through research and study lately sugar is addictive and causes addiction, so if you eat a lot of it harder to control.
