Gratitude Monday & the Little Things in Life

Monday December 5, 2011

Breathe. Let go. And remind yourself that this very moment is the only one you know you have for sure. -Oprah

Welcome to Gratitude Monday. Each Monday, stop by & comment on what you are grateful for & how it will impact you to live a healthier life going forward. How it impacts you does not have to be food or exercise related. It can be in any way, shape or form! If you just want to write a grateful comment & nothing else, that is fine too. If your comment is the same as another one, so be it. Everything goes here!

Today I am thankful for the time I had with a very dear long time family friend. She is a lady that was a very close friend to my parents (when they were alive) & to our family. They met her when we moved to New Jersey & I was in junior high. She is just the funniest lady - full of love & laughter & the most amazing stories - she can tell a story for sure!

She did have tough times as well. She moved out to CA when her children were older because of issues with an abusive husband. She & the youngest daughter lived with us for a while before she got her own place - a very small apartment after living in a huge home back east. She never complained. She got work, lived & enjoyed.

Yes, she is still alive but her daughter just let me know that she had been diagnosed with dementia & they had to put her in a home. She was declining quickly. I wanted to visit her but the daughter said it probably would not be the best idea.

This lady had moved back east to live with her son a few years ago to make her money last longer. California is too expensive for those that don't make much.... BUT she did come out for the summers & stayed with her daughter out here & I am thankful I got to see her when she came to visit. She actually lived with my mom for a while when my mom was alive & after my Dad passed away.

I will always have wonderful memories of this family friend & as Carla wrote on her blog the other day:

Enjoy all the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.

I also posted this to my FB page:

“Time is free, but it's priceless. You can't own it, but you can use it. You can't keep it, but you can spend it. Once you've lost it you can never get it back.”— Harvey MacKay

What are you thankful for today?

What a beautiful friendship she had with your family.

Today I am grateful for my massage therapist. She is very special. She specializes in Reiki and her attitude in life is "whatever happens happens why worry about it?" I need more of this I tend to think of negative things before they even happen. Drives my husband nuts. She is a good person too, and I am glad I found her. Needless to say she works miracles in her massage.

There are so many things I feel grateful today but your post made me think of my mother. She has Alzheimer's and has been in a nursing home in Poland for quite some time now. We have never had a good relationship and yet there is so much I have learned from her even if through a negative example. I am sincerely grateful for all those lessons.

Ewa, so sorry about your mom. My grandmother on my mom's side had that... but we do learn lessons from the not so good stuff too - hugs!

I am so grateful that even though my back still hurts, I know that it will get better and I can get back to being active. Reading this makes me appreciate all those things I often take for granted.

I am just really grateful for a lot of things right now. I feel so very lucky and fortunate. You don't have to have a lot of 'stuff' in life as long as you have the people.

It's so hard watching friends and loved ones when it comes to them losing their mental fitness. It's painful. I see signs of this in my mother now, and it scares me. Perhaps some day there will be a cure for dementia and related ilnesses. We can only hope.

I always hesitate to repsond to a post with a post, but I think this is appropriate for Gratitude Monday. Hope you don't mind... http://contemplativefitness.wordpress.com/2010/10/13/gratatouille/

Grateful for so much! Met some new friends yesterday at a party, love when that happens. Of course in the process I ate 97 platefuls of apps & desserts, but heck, that's what the gym is for. So I guess the elliptical is another thing I'm grateful for today...
