No smoking sign

Please don't forget that today is the
Great American Smokeout. I wrote about it yesterday so that I could tell you in advance of it.

PLEASE join in and SHARE!!!!

We had smokers in my family. Both my parents smoked when I was young but my Dad quit cold turkey when I was in 1st or 2nd grade. My mom smoked for years. She started when she was 17. I hated that smoke growing up. As a kid, I would constantly complain about it. Back then, there was not the information out there that is available now. Living back east as a kid, the winter & cold months in the car were horrible! Windows all closed up & that smoke infecting the car AND US. I wish we knew then what we know now!

As I got older, I would not let people smoke in my house. They had to go outside. When I drive, I can always smell it in cars near me if their windows are open & I will close my car windows. If I am out & about, I move, BUT if it is an area that they should not be smoking, I say something. I think with the knowledge we have now & knowing 2nd hand smoke and 3rd hand smoke kills, we have the right to politely ask people not to smoke in crowded areas or areas that are not designated for smoking.

My mother-in-law also smoked & unfortunately as mentioned in the post yesterday, died from cancer directly related to smoking. My mom also died from cancer, liposarcoma, but the doctors said the smoking had nothing to do with it. I am not sure I believe that since they still have lots of unanswered questions about sarcomas. My mom had stopped in her later years but it had only been for about 5 years.

We have so much information available to us now that it really does bother me when I see people smoking around their children. I hate it around me period BUT to smoke around your kids when we know what we know now - UGH!

Please do NOT be a "do as I say but not as I do" person. Give quitting a try! Head over to THIS SITE for help!

I am quite spoiled, there are relatively very few smokers in SF Bay Area. Whenever I travel either in the US or Europe (especially Europe), I am shocked how many people still smoke.

I have been a strong ant-smoker for years! When I was in medical school, I told the smoking nurses on this smokeout day that they shouldn't smoke in their break room. They all treated me with distain after that.

Nice reminder Jody. Too bad its not Monday, because this should go on my gratitude Monday comments - but I'm very grateful I didn't ever start smoking. Have a wonderful Thursday.

I am with you on this - we know way too much these days for anyone to subject their children to second hand smoke.

Both my parents smoked but they quit when I was young; so young that I don't remember them ever lighting up. I did the typical teen experimentation. I wish that it wasn't still something kids tried. So silly. There seems to be a lot of smoking where my son goes to college and I'm just hoping he is smart enough not to start.
