Food Day

Welcome to Gratitude Monday. Each Monday, stop by & comment on what you are grateful for & how it will impact you to live a healthier life going forward. How it impacts you does not have to be food or exercise related. It can be in any way, shape or form! If you just want to write a grateful comment & nothing else, that is fine too. If your comment is the same as another one, so be it. Everything goes here!

Make empowering women & girls a priority!

I saw this & yes, thankful that people try to show that we are all beautiful no matter what. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder & it is not just about physical beauty!! We come in all shapes, sizes, colors & personalities. I recorded and watched a documentary from the OWN network titled Miss Representation. You can join the movement HERE at www.missrepresentation.org

The show is about this: Miss Representation brings together some of America's most influential women in politics, news and entertainment, including Condoleezza Rice, Nancy Pelosi, Katie Couric, Rachel Maddow, Margaret Cho, Rosario Dawson and Gloria Steinem to give audiences an inside look at the media's message and depiction of women. The film explores women's under-representation in positions of power by challenging their limited and often disparaging portrayals in the media. Miss Representation takes the stand that the media is portraying women's primary values as their youth, beauty and sexuality - rather than their capacity as leaders.

I can tell you that it was very powerful! There are some graphic pictures, language & subject matter but I think teens can watch it & definitely a great way to have an open discussion with girls AND boys about this. You may not want to show younger ones BUT it highlights that we must start the discussion early & how early is up to you but I do think earlier than junior high. There are ways to do it right with each age group! I think the boys need to learn as well not to treat women this way because they are learning from the media to treat them poorly! A couple quotes from the show:

You can't be what you can't see - Marian Wright Edelman

The most common way people give up power is by thinking they don't have any - Alice Walker

AND OF COURSE

Be the change you wish to see in the world - Mahatma Gandhi

How was your weekend? I hope you all had a wonderful one!

PS: Today is Food Day. I saw this over at The Purple Carrot
so I added it on to my post for today! You can find an event near you at the site. Check it out!

"Food Day seeks to bring together Americans from all walks of life—parents, teachers, and students; health professionals, community organizers, and local officials; chefs, school lunch providers, and eaters of all stripes—to push for healthy, affordable food produced in a sustainable, humane way. We will work with people around the country to create thousands of events in homes, schools, churches, farmers markets, city halls, and state capitals."
