Coconut Oil, Cucumbers & Chapped Lips

Wednesday October 5, 2011

I think many of us have suffered with dry, flaky, chapped lips too often to count & would prefer lips that feel & look good like the pic. Now that we are hitting the colder weather months, things get worse with the cold & wind coming at us!

For those that exercise outside during the winter months, it can be even more problematic! It is bad enough just being out & about in the cold months.

I had recorded some DR. Oz shows & he addresses this in a couple of them. One show was about chronic users of lip balms. Apparently, using them too much can actually add to the problem because it does not allow for the sloughing off of dead skin. Chronic users were people that basically had lip balms in every place possible - purse, work, every room they are in, by the bed so they can use it when they wake up in the night & so on. They used them ALL THE TIME! So be prudent when using them!

Dr. Oz also discussed what to use on dry, flaky  & chapped lips. In one show he said that coconut oil can be used on the lips! Hey, I know a lot of you out there are using that in the kitchen these days so if you have it, give it a try & let us know if it works! Of course you only use a little bit... don't keep putting it on there & licking it off & adding calories throughout the day! Something to think about!

In a more recent show, he mentioned using cucumber slices to help slough off the skin & "moisturize". Cucumbers are 96% water so that is why they can help here. Why not try it if you are cutting some up for a salad!

Other options are using a lip specific scrub as needed. I know there are many homemade ones out there. I happened to buy this product a while back & it works good for me. I am lazy about making my own!

ALSO, as I googled info for this post, I found THIS SITE & low & behold, it had both coconut oil & cucumbers on it too along with some other suggestions. Take a look!

What are your tips & remedies for dry, flaky & chapped lips?

I am addicted to moist lips that I get from a vaseline-like chapstick product. I can't buy it locally anymore so get it online. It has SPF 15; an added bonus. I keep it in the car, my purse, by the chair where I watch TV, my desk drawer. I'm not sure when I got so hooked but I hate the feeling when it wears off.

I keep Chap-Stik in my purse at all times, but I do not use it all the time. Perhaps once a day, which isn't chronic.

I can't imagine how coconut oil would do, but I would love to taste it all day!

I've joked that those packaged coffee creamers would work better topically and now, lol! I may be right! Coconut oil is one of the main ingredients. They are probably less expensive at the food counter than the cosmetics section

Hi Dana. Thought I would just say HI! Hope all is going well with you all & the company too! I am not a fan of rain so I will take chapped lips. My hair is too curly & frizzy!

Coconut oil is fantastic on lips and dry skin because it absorbs quickly and is less greasy than other oils.

If I start to get chapped lips, I find that good old Vaseline at night before I go to bed works wonders. I don't lick it off in my sleep and it has time overnight to soften the skin.

I will also do that if my hands get badly dried and cracked. Coat them with vaseline and put a couple socks over your hands at bedtime. Real attractive, but the next morning your hands will be soooo soft!
