When "Quitting" is OK

Wednesday September 28, 2011

Last week I was working on posts, thinking about & working on a couple guest posts, working on a book review (coming up tomorrow on Willpower & was the big motivator for this post!!!), researching & job searching & a few other things and I started to get "burned out" with the computer & the posts and such.

What did I do? NO, I did not quit BUT I did JUST WALK AWAY! I was getting to the point where I was not doing myself nor my blog & other work any good. So, I got up, went to the prerecorded shows on the DVR & watched a couple! YES I DID! You know what, it made me feel better! I just needed that!

So, honestly, I am NOT saying quitting is OK! I bet some of you are disappointed after reading the title to my post! Nope, not allowing for excuses here BUT I am allowing for the honest assessment of how you are feeling & making a choice based on that - changed priorities.

None of the I "think I am feeling ill" so I will just not work out. If we are honest with ourselves, many of us will say we do that to give ourselves an excuse not to do it.

Same with the "burn out" effect for exercise. Are you burned out & just need a day off OR are you bored & need to try something different? If you are bored & want to QUIT because you don't look forward to the way you are working out - NO EXCUSE for quitting! Just find a different form of exercise to do & do that! Nothing says you have to run every time or go to the gym every time or whatever you are doing. Mix it up & change it up so you don't use the "QUIT" word! In fact, after I wrote this, Carla (MizFit) wrote this cool post & part of it said this: "Traditional sports not your thing? Learn to master pogo sticks, hula hoops, or ping-pong. Join a roller derby league. Go child-like—go strange—because you don’t have to go safe."

Another example - Lori had an injury that stopped her from running. She really wanted to run again so after getting past the injury, she decided to give it a try again. She spent a few weeks at it BUT the injury was just not going to let her run again without pain. IT was not worth it. But did she QUIT? NO! She loves her bike riding anyway so she made the decision to not run & do all bike riding. Now she loves cycling so not hard for her but you get the point here.....

NO QUITTING - just find something else you can do or want to do & don't tell me there is nothing - that is an excuse!

Reassessing & working thru boredom or burn out is fine - quitting all together is not!

Thoughts? Have you had to "change your priorities" and try something new due to boredom? OR are you just a person that does a lot of different things so you don't get bored?

This post came a day to late. I truly quit mentally weight lifting, I was burned out and didn't want to do it anymore, but last night I promised my Group I would do it give it another try and I was so happy! I looked at myself in the mirror and saw a new fitter person since the last time I did it and my muscles were just as strong as before didn't lose a thing! So I am glad I tried it one more time before quitting.

    Great post!

we know, in our heart of hearts, when something just isnt clicking for us---and when we just wanna quit because it is challenging us in needed and painful ways.

Wonderful post! I need to stop "quitting" with weight training. My sad attempts are short-lived. I probably would benefit from going to a gym because its so easy to get distracted at home.

Over the years I've learned what injuries I can work through and which needed rest. I was not always so smart

With blogging, I often "quit." If I am sitting here and the words are not flowing, I do best to walk away.

I agree...I find if I give up wiht workouts I get discouraged working my way back to where I was. Learning to adjust to my knee and let it "be" has been a challenge, but I'm learning to listen to my body. I just try and change it up...do *something* and before I know it (unless I'm really tired and need a nap more than a workout) I'm feeling better for having gotten moving that day.

Sometimes, stepping back can do far more good than just plowing through. Other times, it works to just focus on getting through it. Wouldn't it be nice if we always knew which one was the right path?

As soon as my contract is up, I am quitting kickboxing...not because I don't love it, but because I don't love what the owners of the dojo where I kickbox have turned it into...it's just not fun there any more and if ain't fun, I'm not doin' it! And believe it or not, I'll be quitting with a brown belt, just shy of a black belt...but I've decided I really don't need that black belt.
