"What Does Strength Training Man to You?"

FJ from FitMarker and FitJerk.com asked me to be part of a POST  on a new blog that he is helping promote called Lift Heavy that answers that question above. I had to keep it short for the post so this is what I wrote below - yup, that is short for me! :

I plan on working out till I can’t anymore which means I am no longer on this earth! I do want to mention that after 30 years, my feet took a toll & without my Hoka One One shoes, I would not be working out. Yes, they are running shoes but they saved my working out life! If you do running or hiking or walking to supplement your workouts, check them out!  From Jody - I know, I am always thanking my lucky stars for these shoes!

I first want to mention that I will be 54 in November so how I feel now is different than when I started lifting weights 30 years ago. Back then, it was just part of my routine with cardio & aerobics classes being more important. I did know enough to realize that weights would make me look better & firm too.

It was not until my mid 30′s that I got really serious about weights, meaning they became my love vs. just doing them them. I did my first bodybuilding contest in my late 30′s. It was at this time that I really built & saw my muscles and I LOVED IT! I loved looking strong & muscular & did not care that some guys did not like it! I was married anyway! <img

Now in my 50′s & still working out & lifting like crazy, I still LOVE the way I look with muscles. Staying lean is a lot harder at this age but worth it! More importantly, as I age, to be able to take care of myself & lift heavy things without help & do so many regular day activities that many people my age & younger can’t do – well, the proof is there – weights have not only made me look fit BUT live life actively & healthier as I age!

So...... if you are interested in more of this hard core weight training info along with other great info as well, check out both FJ's sites above along with Lift Heavy. There will be some salty language BUT worth the reads!

What does strength training mean to you!!!! I could write much more about me but let's hear from you!

I have a love/hate relationship with weight lifting. There are months when I love it, and then there are months... right now I am in love mode. Being your age, I totally understand what you mean by being strong. And yes, it makes me giggle inside when I can lift things men younger than me cannot. Gosh, that makes me feel good. Hope my love streak will last.
Now off to check the links you recommended. Thanks.
And why do I need to enter that code three times before it takes my comment?

So sorry about stupid GoDaddy! You are not the only one that writes me about trouble commenting! Really drives me crazy that there are so many things wrong with this provider!

I've never been interested in the body building aspect of it (good thing, too! ), but I love strength training for the internal strength I gain.

I have to say that I've never really lifted weights to build muscles Of course I do lift and exercise plenty, but my goal has always been to be strong, stay strong, and do the many sports and other activities that are part of my life. If I worked as a lumberjack, I can't imagine me lifting weights at all, lol!

I am not interested in the body building part of lifting, but I love - love how strong and confident lifting makes me feel.

And those that worry about bulking up need to look hard at the picture you posted of that woman. She sure doesn't look bulky to me!

Jody, I just read this one from one of the links you suggested; not about weight lifting but losing weight: http://www.yourefatbecauseyourestupid.com/ - very offensive - love it! I wish I read it years ago when I just could not make myself to lose weight. What a great kick in the butt this is!

The problem with the "honesty" of that link is unfortunately, in my opinion, it does not have an effect on its supposed audience. It is more of a rant. As a teachers, I had to learn how to get my material to my students to be effective.

I hear ya DR. J.. there has to be a mid point there. I think in general, there is too much coddling of people & then you have the other extreme. People don't always want to hear the truth & how to get them to hear it is the bigger issue... l

Strength training has taken a dive in my world sadly. I lost the momentum I had for it the better my running is getting.

I do try to continue with pushups because I love how I feel stronger and having some muscle showing in the arms.

    I'll check out those websites.
