Testing My PATIENCE

Wednesday August 3, 2011

So, what does this cheek stuffed chipmunk have to do with my patience - one of the words I use when people ask me what are the most important things in weight loss.....

Course I have written about this many times - Patience, finding what works for you - listening to your bod as I say, FOOD which is at least 75% of the equation. I am one that has learned along the way BUT it is so much more important with age so I now also tell people to always be learning.

BUT today brings me to the exact opposite of a lot of people out there - NOT working out. For me, this is tough cause I love my workouts & love lifting weights!

Well, for my long term readers, you know I have been going to UCLA for over 1.5 years for teeth work. Part of that was getting 2 teeth pulled about 5++ months ago in prep for implants. Well, yesterday I was at UCLA to get posts in as stage 2 of this process. Well, one tooth got the post BUT the other needed more bone grafting so I got that too & will have to do the post on that one in about 4 months. The other tooth will get a crown as the final stage.

Anyway, I look like that chipmunk today - well worse & they say it gets worse before better! Actually the bone graft side is way worse than the other side. Yes, work on both sides on my mouth and 1 upper & 1 lower!

So, I have been told not to work out for at least a few days & of course, like CammyTami - soft foods. OH NO, no bread! Actually, my protein muffins (recipe coming later this week) & my protein bars are pretty soft & I can make them mushy enough to eat along with protein powder mixed with water or almond milk & other soft stuff like egg whites & oatmeal with protein powder. I am adding ground flax to stuff to help get in my fiber & loving my homemade guac (I add flax to this too). I can add that to the eggs & other foods that it mixes with.

So, my patience is being tested to follow the rules! I want to do ab/core work at home & I am thinking about whether I can get to the gym by Thursday - I KNOW - BAD! I look pretty bad so we shall see how I feel & that will be what matters. Thursday is looking VERY iffy!

I NEED TO PRACTICE MY PATIENCE! I tell you guys to be patient so I will try to be patient with this. I am not a good "sick person" because I really have had very few sick times in my life - times that I could not work out.

Help me thru this!!! Cammy & Tami - I know you understand!

Have any of you out there gone thru this? How are you doing being patient with your goals?

Well sadly I am one of the most patient of folks when it comes to sickness and pain because I lived in it for so many many years. However, I understand why you do not want to not workout. My day feels wasted if I do not and unproductive. On the flip side, you have to take care of other parts of your body now so if your dentist said no they you just have to go with it.

I am so sorry you are going through all this mouth surgery, that has got to be tough!

Sheri - thx! It does feel weird not to even do abs/core at home. The pain is pretty bad right now & they say the swelling gets worse before better so I will see how tomorrow feels & maybe try something at home if I am better... don't want to ruin anything & have to get it done again!

It drove me crazy when I was due for and then after hernia surgery that I could not exercise. But, sometimes we gotta do what we gotta do. I can empathize with you... I had a crown fall out over the weekend and while that is very minor in comparison, I did a lot of soft food eating and chewed only on one side for days! Hope you are healed fast!!!

Karen, yes, you went thru this in a different way! Driving me crazy BUT I feel pretty bad so I really don't want to do anything to hurt the work that they did - don't want to have it redone!

Sorry Jody! It's a river you have to cross, but you will be happy on the other side!

I know for me, when I think about some things I can't imagine how I will cope with them, yet when they actually happen, I somehow do what I have to do. I guess it's an acceptance thing.

Dr. J - you are right. I am doing what I have to do & I feel pretty UGH so it is hard to even do things so.... I hope by Friday I feel well enough to at least do some core work at home... watching the food carefully though & since I can't eat a lot of things, not too hard to do that!

I am sorry about the not working out thing..I totally get it. Take care of yourself and think of something you can do for yourself in the time frame you usually work out in. Maybe try something totally new.

Hi Dana! Well, right now, all I can do is rest due to the pain & swelling..... not working out is doing something totally different!

So sorry to hear about your tooth issues! Have fun creating your soft diet, though

Please stay away from the gym if they tell you not to. You don't want extra swelling in your mouth, which is what will happen if you work out too soon.

Oh NO! Ouch. I hope you feel better soon!!!

Rest as long as you need to! I just got back in the gym after 10 days out of it and my lifts are better than ever -- so much more in tune with my body now that it's rested up

{{{Hugs}}} from me to you! You're right, I do understand the frustration! And you're also right in that the soft food was annoying after awhile, but the exercise ban was BRUTAL! I found it helpful to focus on the blessing that I could have the procedure at all, as well as all the other good things in my life. I'll admit, there were a few moments when that was as difficult as avoiding exercise, but it got me through. You'll make it through, too! (My stitches came out yesterday, and everything seems to look good. Now it's on to more waiting. )
