DR. J - I know you are going to have something to say here!
1. I got my ACE, American Council on Exercise newsletter last week & this very good SHORT video on assessing your health risk at home was part of it. There are many ways to do this including BMI & yes, not everyone fits in to each of them perfectly.
We DO KNOW though that the size of your waist is an indicator of cardiovascular disease. Also, waist to hip ratio is also an indicator of cardiovascular disease mortality.
THIS VIDEO talks to all 3 - Please check it out. It has graphs as well.
2. In this newsletter, ACE also reviewed P90X, Insanity and Rushfit (had not heard of this one). We all have things we love to do & you may disagree with some of what is written BUT it gives you a good idea of what to expect & what might meet your needs best. CHECK IT OUT.
How is your waist and/or waist to hip ratio doing? What are your thoughts on the ACE review of P90X, Insanity & Rushfit? Anyone done Rushfit & if yes, what did you think of it?
Thx to all on the wonderful & insightful comments on my post yesterday! Lots of you get it! Funny thing with me how the bodyfat goes up way more than the couple extra pounds on the bod ... good old age hormone crap!

The P90X and the other two are way to fast and use their feet in ways I cannot do so those are out. I would like to have tried them, but no can do.
My waist still is the largest thing on me, I never could get it down all the way, but diabetes is under control.

Sheri, you are doing great! Honestly, my waist is a fine size but is bigger than people always think it is - I widen my back to make it appear smaller.

No pressure here
Being aware of our risk factors can direct us to minimize the risks if we want to. Of course with over 2/3 of adults over weight or obese it ain't happening.
BMI may not be perfect for CV disease, but there are plenty of other problems besides CV disease that can befall us if our BMI is too high. Live in denial if you want to, but 99.9% of people with a BMI over 25 are taking a chance with their health. In my opinion, excess bulk even if it is muscle puts a strain on the heart as we get older.

Well, since I am bootylicious, my ratio has always been fine

Karen, yes, for perimenopause & menopausal women, they do tend to gain weight in the middle. Me I am get squishy in the middle with my current prob (as written in my posts) but my lower tummy gains it more.

Noooo, don't extend the deadline--that dilutes my chances of winning!
My waist-hip ratio is pitiful, largely due to excess skin from the weight loss. I don't fret it, though, because I'm 45" smaller than I was from bust, waist, and hips. I'll take it!

It's always good to read reviews from a reputable source before investing in workout DVD's. We were given a copy of P90X but after trying it I would be willing to purchase it. The review from ACE is very accurate, IMO.

Karen, thx for your comment on P90X so others know it is accurate.

I so love the waist to hip ratio versus BMI for judging health. It's not perfect but it's a LOT better than that chart... according to BMI I am "overweight" right now (down a few lbs from the last pic I posted) because my muscle weighs so much.

Sable, yes, those of us with muscle tend to sit higher on the BMI chart. I am within range but I am sure healthier than the number I get shows...
