Feet, Food and Exercise - Part 2

If you missed Part 1, please check that out HERE.
So, yesterday I was chatting about my feet & how they have effected my workout - hurting so bad that I have had to cut back on the amount & intensity of my workouts. I have to mention though that I had a great treadmill workout yesterday! I had some fast speeds & great HIIT like the old days & even some hill jogging! Very exciting! We will see what today brings after working them so hard yesterday. I have had other workouts like this with the new shoes but not every day like before. Just thrilled to have some really good days.. AND, feet felt fine walking around IN the shoes to do weights. PLUS BREAKING NEWS!!! Hoka is coming out with a every day walking shoe!! When I get the info, I will post about it!
Today I am talking abut how I have had to change up the food program & the exercise.
First - FOOD: I think this is a point many miss in the equation of weight loss & especially maintenance. Any change in how much you exercise or the intensity will require a change in the food. If you are doing less or burning fewer calories, you are going to have to eat less or adjust to that. If you weigh less, you need fewer calories if you are doing the same intensity or less than before.
Since I have had to cut back on how much cardio I do and also how often & hard I do my HIIT and intervals, well, that means I am not burning off as many calories as previously. Add this to some new & ongoing women/aging hormone issues that have come up, well.... something has to give & that means a re-evaluation of the food program, how much I am eating & what I am eating.
I know many hate to hear this - how food is a big part of the weight loss & maintenance equation - but it is what it is & better accept it now or you are gonna be one unhappy person!
The scale: I know - a dreaded word for many of you - and I understand that. For many, it hinders them. Me, I have been weighing myself every day for years now. I weigh first thing in the morn with the same type of clothes on and on the same scale at home. We all know the scale can be fickle day to day BUT if 4 or 5 days past a weigh in, I am still UP, well, that tells me to take a look & not to make excuses for it! If you keep making excuses like bloating, or water gain or too much salt or I ate this or that, well, 3 months down the line you are going to be heavier... and if you keep making excuses, a year down the line you are going to be 10 pounds or 20 pounds heavier, maybe more. Who knows how much but you do have to NOT make excuses for continuous days of a heavier weight on the scale (unless of course you are on medication or something like that which can cause weight gain).
My scale said I was up 1.5 to 2.5 (occasional 3) pounds since the feet caused me to cut back on exercise. I also have a scale that does bodyfat & BMI. Yes, we know it is not completely accurate BUT it is what I use every day so it is telling me what has changed per that scale I use daily. My bodyfat percentage has gone up about .5 to 1.5 points on any given day. I am one that does go up & down with the scale before the foot incident but this is now a regular up for me.
The pants I use for measurement fit OK BUT without the scale, I could have made an excuse like they are really not that much tighter & that could have gone on till they were just way too tight SO the scale & the clothes have told me to adjust & that is what I am doing for now. I will let you know how it goes. Honesty, it is not anything too bad BUT I am going to nip this before it gets too far. We all know it is harder to get off the more weight we put on & the older we get.
YOU OUT THERE - DO NOT MAKE EXCUSES WHEN YOU KNOW THE TRUTH!
Exercise: I have not cut back on my intensity in terms of I work as hard as I can & intense as I can based on what my feet let me do. But as I mentioned previously, I have cut back on how much cardio I do by about 15 minutes & I can't always do the HIIT & intervals I did before & also sometimes my regular running or other machine workouts are slower than before due to the feet. I still feel like I am working really hard BUT I know I could do more if the feet let me.
Weights are still my love & I do them as intensely as I can based on the feet & how they are feeling. I used to stand for all free weight moves that allowed me to do so just to work my core more & standing does burn more calories. I still do this as much as possible but there are times I sit. I also used to move around the gym so fast going from 1 exercise to the next. I still do this but sometimes my feet don't let me move as fast.
I will say that I am still very intense but again, I know I could do more if the feet let me.
Saying all this - I am happy to be able to just do things & I still do more than many people with no issues.
I want to say A HUGE THX TO SHERI FOR TURNING ME ON THE THE HOKA ONE ONE SHOES!!!!!
Feel free to comment away!

Its amazing how our feet can hold us hostage isn't it? I sure hope that you will be able to do your HIIT workouts again and more with the Hoka's.
I am in denial, I am someone who puts it off and puts it off knowing I am gaining weight because I am not eating right. I need to find that inner being that got me to lose 60 pounds in the first place. It gets harder the longer I go and lie to myself that I can eat whatever I want and still be thin.

Sheri, another good workout today!
I know I can't eat what I used to - always knew that.. it is hard with age & having to cut back when you are already working hard - these friggin women hormones!

Glad they are working for you and glad they are coming out with regular shoes because that is what I really struggle to find. Please let us know when you learn more.
I gave you a blog award today, Jody. I know you don't really like those things and you won't offend me at all if you do nothing with it. Just wanted to pass it on to you anyways

Karen, I love blog awards! Thank you! It is the passing them on.. i just don't like picking one over the other since they all have great things to say!
On the shoes, they are like walk around sneakers - not like cute walking shoes. I can't wear any regular shoes due to my wide feet & bunions.

Fine, I wont make any excuses. I have a whole box of them. Some used a dozen or more times, like the cat pee'd on my homework. Some never used, like the cat was using the treadmill so I couldn't use it. But if you insist, I shall put my box of excuses away.

You know Jody - I read that so much on blogs about how people blame this and that for the scale being up and that it can't be a true gain. Fact is, doesn't matter whether it is water or what - if the scale is up, you had better pay attention!
Sorry to hear about the foot problems, but glad you got a great workout in and hope it continues to get better with the new shoes!

Lori, we sure do have to pay attention & age makes it even more important!

Thanks for this honest and inspiring piece, Jody! It's important to tell it like it is, yet show that if it is important to us, we can get it done!
Great job!

Hi Jody, I did look up those comfy shoes and will have to find a local place where I can try them on before buying -- I'm ready for them. I got in 10,000+ steps today, and my feet and legs are sore. Bet those shoes would have helped.
