Gatorade G Series FIT Workout Products

Wednesday April 20, 2011

So as I mentioned in my last week's posts WITH pics HERE and HERE, the GirlGetStrong ladies sent me to a Gatorade event for them here in nearby Los Angeles, CA. I wrote a post similar to this over there. They are launching the 3 products: a pre-workout fuel, a hydration drink to have during the workout and a post recovery drink. I tasted each one & am testing out the pre-workout fuel at home now with my workouts. I will tell you my thoughts about each one based on my thoughts now after trying them there.

1. Pre-Workout Fuel: Per Gatorade: "A specialized pre-workout fuel in the form of small energy bites designed to help fitness athletes prepare for their workout by providing nutrients for the body and carbohydrates to help one get the most out of their workout, without feeling too full.  G Series FIT 01 Prime offers personalized portion control and stay-fresh packaging which makes it easy to fuel individual energy needs and to customize portion size based on intensity and duration of the workout."

CARBOHYDRATE: 27 grams from sources including fruit and nuts; PROTEIN: 6 grams of whey protein (per package); CALORIES: 50 calories (per piece)

FLAVORS: Banana Nut, Cranberry Pistachio and Cinnamon Raisin Flax

From Jody: The package contains 4 prepackaged "bites" (pic above shows them out of their individual package) so that you can choose to take 1 or up to all 4 depending on hard or intense your workout is that day. They are easily portable since they have their own package per "bite". My favorite was the cinnamon raisin flax followed by the other two which I liked equally. You can see from the picture that each bite has an eatable rice type paper around it so your fingers don't get all messy. I have been there & done that eating my homemade protein bars/cookies to or from my UCLA trip! Do love the portability!

I am usually one not to like to eat before a workout as it upsets my stomach but I took 2 with me to my workouts, ate one before & one during & felt fine last week. Monday, I took one before my weight workout & was feeling fine as well. I will update you next week as I keep trying them.

Dislikes: I am not thrilled with some of the ingredients, especially sugar being #2 on the list & palm oil but at least that is the very last ingredient. To be fair, I see ingredients like this in many other bars out there but we all have to make choices for ourselves.

Again, I am not one to eliminate every little thing from my food... I do tend to eat mostly all whole foods so adding this in is not a big thing to worry about for me but I am hoping that Gatorade might work on some of the ingredients in the future. I will update you next week as I use what I have left in the house. I do really like the individual packs (below) & being able to choose how many I want to eat. Would sell for about $1.99 for a pack of 4.

Here are the stats & ingredients for the cinnamon first & then the Banana one. The nutritional stats are for all 4 bites:

2. On to the Perform Workout Hydration: Per Gatorade: "A lightly-flavored electrolyte drink designed to  help fitness athletes maintain hydration more efficiently than water. G Series FIT 02 Perform helps to replace the fluid and electrolytes lost in sweat while invigorating the senses to keep one pushing through a workout without being weighed down.  The innovative bottle features a hydration gauge that allows fitness athletes to track their fluid consumption throughout their workout or activity, a sports cap for quick and easy drinking, and a slim-sized bottle designed to fit bike and treadmill drink holders. G Series FIT 02 Perform also features a unique cooling taste that provides a crisp feel on the tongue when consumed."

ELECTROLYTES: 110 milligrams of sodium and 30 milligrams of potassium (per serving); CALORIES: 10 calories (per serving)

FLAVORS: Mango Passionfruit, Melon Pear, and Berry Acai

From Jody: To me, the drinks were very similar to Propel (sorry to mention that in the same sentence but gives you a frame of reference). Ingredients are slightly different but on the same line with both having sodium in there. Gatorade also has a couple sugar grams per serving. I liked all 3 flavors. I had been using Propel before & even with Propel, I would water it down to 1/2 & 1/2 just because I was looking for a little flavor. Drinking this just as is tastes great & absolutely no overpowering flavor. They even have a little nifty hydration check on the side of the bottle (see pic below & write up above) if you want to make sure it lasts you thru your workout along with an easy hold design. Me, I still pour mine into my own gym water bottle to take to the gym with me. Would sell for about $1.49 per 16 ounce bottle.

3. Post Workout Replenishment: Per Gatorade: "A light, refreshing, fruit-based smoothie designed to help restore your body after a workout through a blend of protein (12g), carbohydrates (12g), vitamins and minerals, with 120 calories per 11.16 oz. serving.  Some real fruit juice, calcium and vitamin D, make G Series FIT 03 Recover great to consume within 30-60 minutes following activity to effectively assist in muscle recovery. In an effort to meet the busy lifestyle demands of the fitness athlete, G Series FIT 03 Recover does not need to be refrigerated before being consumed."

PROTEIN: 12 grams of protein (per serving); VITAMINS: Contains some real fruit juice, calcium and vitamin D (25%); CARBOHYDRATE: 12 grams of carbohydrate (per serving); CALORIES: 120 calories (per serving)

FLAVORS: Strawberry Banana, Blueberry Pomegranate, and Mango Pineapple

From Jody: Once again, I liked all 3 flavors. Easy for people on the go that don't go home from their workouts, are on the run after them or just like to have the ease of opening the fridge & having your post workout drink ready to roll without doing anything. I know there are plenty out there. Right now, I don't do a smoothies after my workout because the hubby is still sleeping & the blender would wake him up so this could be an option. The carb to protein ratio is good & yes, there are sugar grams but not as many as I see in a lot of the other drinks out there. Only 2 grams of fat for those watching that as well. Would sell for about $2.99 per serving - 1 package.

The ingredients/stats are below:

So overall, I liked the taste of all the products. I am used to eating healthy & "cleaner" so I will just qualify for those whose taste buds are used to a lot of fat or sugar or are just starting into their healthy eating ways MAY have to adjust to taste. To me, tastes fine!

I really did like the portability of the pre-workout fuel & the option to eat 1-4 "bites". The hydration water is a great & I already use Propel "watered down" for some flavor so it is all up to you. Great for on the go as well. Post workout, again, ease of fueling yourself right after a workout & I think many people need options like this.

The G Series FIT products will be available in April 2011 at retailers including Target and Walgreens among other mass, drug and grocery stores nationwide.

I will be back next week on some fun stuff I did while at the event AND more feedback on the pre-workout fuel. Fun stuff includes a workout with Gunnar Peterson and a chat with Olympic swimmer & medal winner Ryan Lochte!!

Thank you again to the GirlGetStrong ladies for asking me to attend this event for them! My review is over at their place too - HERE!

Do you think these are products you might try? If not, why? I know Gatorade is looking for feedback.

Sadly for Gatorade, no. I don't workout hard enough to need them The only sports drink I use is Powerade Zero (no calories) and only because it tastes better over a long time than water. Especially on a bike ride on a hot day.

After the university sold the rights to PepsiCo, Gatorade became franken-ade! Some products get better over time, Gatorade did not

For me, right now, I would probably not use these products. For one, they are not vegetarian so that's a problem for me right there -- and the ingredients lists are kind of icky. I have the time and ability to prep my own intra- and pre-workout fuel so luckily I don't need to resort to products like these, but from what I've seen of similar products these are really no worse nutritionally and cost-wise.

I would not try it 1) it doesn't have enough nutrients for what I need it to do and that is to keep my blood sugar stable during runs. 2) I think Gatorade is overkill on pushing dehydration.

I am reading a book that has scientific proof that running less than 2 hours you do not need to be "hydrated" or "fueled". As a diebetic, I have to eat to keep my blood sugar up, but normal people do not. That was from the book http://www.amazon.com/Runners-World-Body-Exercise-Stronger/dp/1605298611

Gatorade, I simply do not drink it because its taste is not a good one to me. But my kids drink enough of it to make up for my lack of drinking it.

How anyone can combine the words "healthy eating ways" into a sentence that describes a product that contains nuro-toxins in the way of artificial sweeteners is beyond me. I never thought a poison tasted healthy lol. Good review beyond that.
