Injuries and Change; Happy Passover

Monday April 18, 2010

First, tonight at sundown, Passover starts - Happy Passover to all that celebrate!

So, I have been talking about my poor bad feet forever but more recently I mentioned that the fat pads on the front of my feet are "shot" - meaning they need more fat in them. My last post on this said it was only my right foot BUT I am feeling it in my left now too - UGH to that & aging! I was surprised that nobody had really heard of this because I have seen some stories on this in the last few months but mostly related to women that wear high heels & the effect of that pressure on the forefoot area due to the angle of the high heels causes - the fat pads areas diminish over time.. so younger women needing this too!

So - what have I been doing to get around this? Mix it up more of course! I already do that AND I do use multiple cardio machines in one workout but now I do this:

1.  I do the cardio stuff that seems to bother that area the most earlier in the week. So my treadmill running both flat & hill, intervals & HIIT all done earlier in my workout week.

2. Although I was already doing the Elliptical & StepMill as well, I do more of them than I used to on the treadmill running days.

3. One day in the gym I do no treadmill running at all & do just Elliptical & StepMill.

4. See those pics above? I have been changing gyms so I can run on newer treadmills that absorb the impact more and these babies incline to 30 degrees!!!!!! YIKES! I am used to 15 degrees. So, in addition, I am doing some treadmill walking & working on getting to the higher inclines above that 15 since I was already doing the 15 degree incline. I am also doing my backward walking still but working on doing the higher inclines. No, I have NOT got near the 30 without holding on!

5. I always take 2 days off before my outside run so that has helped me to still be able to run outside. My feet do feel better AFTER a couple days off.

So this is how I think know it is the fat pads... the issue of the pain in that area always decreases with my days off & in fact starts to feel decent. I even tested a 3 day off a few weeks ago & they really feel better with rest. There is no pain radiating to the toes like in some of the other probs in my last post - link above.

I got a link to a local doctor that does a cutting edge procedure for this that is not short term like it used to be. I emailed them about it & unfortunately it costs about $5000 to get both feet done. Like I did not know that was going to happen! I know this stuff costs! The first appt. they have for a consult is June! That is how popular this! Looks like my program above will be happening for a while since I can't afford that! I also got another recommendation that I will check on today.

How am I feeling about this? Yes, it is frustrating to me not to be able to run more & do my HIIT & intervals as much as I want to BUT I am thankful that I still can do things & doing is better than not doing! Like MizFitSheri & Lori,  injuries teach us how to work around them & that is what I am doing for now. I have never had any problems like this in all my workout years & that is about 30 years so.... I have been lucky.

I do know that if I ever have the money, I will get this fixed though because it will just get worse from here! In the meantime, I will keep on keeping on & work around this in the best way possible!

OK, DON'T GIVE UP! Find a way to work around those obstacles in your path - YOU CAN!

Anyone want to share their story!

    Happy Passover!!!
Hope you can find relief for your feet soon. Fingers crossed your next consultation provides a solution that is not as costly. Heck, they should pay you to be their success spokesperson.

    Amen, DON'T GIVE UP!

I am so sorry to hear that your feet are getting worse. Before spending the money on surgery, I would invest in those Hoka One One's. I cannot walk far in regular gym shoes, but in those they allow me the freedom to run like I was "normal".

I was interviewed by a wonderful lady this weekend it will be out tonight! Your more than welcome to share it if you like what you see. God bless my friend.

    I feel your pain, Jody!!

As an athlete, I've dealt with injuries for as long as I can remember! I say that I am either injured or ready for further punishment, but I know really, it's not a joke

    Good luck with it all!

I hope you get your feet issues fixed. I can't imagine how frustrating it must be for a fitness nut (in the best meaning of that word) person like you.
30% incline? That is insane. I could use a treadmill like that for my training.

Ewa - yes, I admit, I am a nut! Another guy in the gym & I were taking about this today & how crazy we are about our workouts!

I bet you could use that treadmill. After reading your blog & seeing all those amazing pics - would be a help, wouldn't it!
