Diets, Out Training Them & Life
You never can out train a bad diet.
Honestly, I was a little hesitant to post the above picture BUT I just wanted to get across the importance of healthy eating & yes, moving and/or exercising in terms of your LIFE and yes, life expectancy. Read Dr. J's post if you want the stats back-up! Read this Dr. J post too. Powerful!
I know that most of you out there hear over & over about how food is at least 75-80% of the weight loss equation. Yes, I have written plenty about this! Back when, I did a post about the Jackie Warner show and wrote this:
Anyone seen Thintervention with Jackie Warner? Well, when she caught one of the clients eating 2 oreo cookies, she strapped a calorie monitor to him & made him exercise holding the cookies until that monitor showed that he had burned off the 140 calories he ate by having just 2 cookies! If you saw what it took to burn off just those 2 calories! A LOT!!!!!!!
Lesson: When you put something in your mouth that does not jive with your health program, think about what you will have to do to burn that off! Check HERE to see what it takes to burn off a certain amount of calories for some foods. Go to the link & then scroll down to Halloween Treats Calorie Calculator & the New Years one right under that. Click on the foods & calculate & it will tell you what you have to do to work that off!!!!!
Honestly, it took me some time to really really believe this. I made lots of great changes with my workout program but it was not till I got that food right that it all clicked.
Yes, there are many ways to get the food right. You have to figure out what works for you, what foods you do want to include & what ones you just can't handle.. there are plenty of healthy choices out there so we do NOT have to all be eating the same stuff! "DIETS DON'T WORK".... meaning the ones that say go on this & then lose this weight & then you go off & are done - DON'T WORK!
I plan my food program around the healthy choices that meet my needs & make me happy to eat them!
It just comes down to knowing that what you put in your mouth has a HUGE effect on your weight loss and maintenance goals.... and most likely as time goes on, as you age, as LIFE changes, you will have to adjust & make changes as I have done thru the years.
Have you played the "I can out train my diet" game on yourself? Any "stories" you care to share?

I know firsthand how true this is. I have been a consistent exerciser for ages, but, as you know, struggled with the eating part. And my weight reflected that. I wish I could convince my husband of this same thing! He is all about the exercise and really needs to work on his eating.

April - you are working it!

You're right in that it's all about finding what works for us individually and choosing something that we will do consistently. Like you, I'm a moderation gal, although sometimes not quite as moderate as others.

Maybe treadmills, instead of numerical displays, ought to have pictures of how much of a cookie one burned while exercising.
The truth is that for many of us food is an addiction, some studies show, as strong as cocaine. If that is the case, it is much more difficult to control it. One cannot just quit food. And those cookies, I bet are even more addictive.

Ewa, yes, food is an addiction! I have been watching the Oprah show that just started on that....

I 100% agree! You cannot out-train a bad diet. ONE slip up will cost you hours and hours of medium to high intensity work -- it's better to just avoid or plan for the slip up with DIET, not cardio.

Sable - planning is really so important, isn't it!

This is the thing that drives me crazy sometimes...for me, Ihave to exercise, but the eating is the key between healthy and fit and "whoah hot mamma!" I admit, some days I really dislike looking at all food and asking myself if I really want it first...I'd like to just not make food such an issue, as it sort of already is...but such is life.
I know when I splurge I must work it off...and so I do

Geosomin, I have been at this for years & yes, sometimes my thought process can drive me crazy but most times, it is just a day to day way of life. I hope it becomes that way for you!

Very well said, Jody!! Thank you for the links! I would also like to add that you can't make up for poor eating by adding healthy foods to a poor diet, it just does not work!
