Metatarsalgia

So back to my feet & running. I have made comments here & there about my bad feet - flatter than flat, wider than wide, bunions.. and now with age & having worked out since my early 20's, the fat pads in my feet are, well, getting too thin! I need fat! When did you think you would hear that! This is fairly common as we age. The link takes you to a few issues but I am sort of the second one although I don't have all the symptoms they describe there. I don't have bruises or sharp pains or anything. It is just the pad in my right foot only has worn out. My left foot feels fine for now. I am an overpronator with all my other issues described above!

So, as I overcompensated for the pain (yes, stupid!), I managed to get other things off balance & am rehabing some things. Due to this, I have cut back on my running a bit & added more Elliptical & StepMill to my cardio workouts. I was already doing them but I am just changing it up even more.

In my defense, I had been doing my treadmill running on some very old machines at the 24 Hour Fitness I go to most days. I have complained about the old cardio equipment but to no avail. SOOOOO, I finally decided to try some running at a different location with newer machines. It was like night & day. The old ones feel like concrete running compared to the newer ones & I think some of my issues may have come from these older machines as I have been running on them for years & they were old when I started going to that gym... HEAR ME 24 HOUR FITNESS! I know 24 Hour Fitness is revamping a lot of the gyms BUT this one needed it big time & I hope they do it soon since I like it better & it is closer for me - especially with the price of gas!

Anyway, back to the forefoot/fat pad area issue. Has anyone out there had this & have you tried that procedure for injecting fat into that area of the foot? I really want to know if this works and how long it lasts. I have seen this on medical shows. Some younger ladies do it so they can wear those high heels. Me, I just want to be able to run without that pain from minimal padding!

Before you ask me about inserts - YES, I have tried different ones & actually it makes it worse as I need less pressure there & any more padding via inserts (gel or otherwise) I put there makes it feel worse... I need to take the pressure off it meaning either that area does not touch too much OR that fat pad injection.

So, any help for me out there???

Next week I will write a post about the changes I have made to my routine to help me get thru this & actually, change is always good! The Elliptical & StepMill, although I had already been doing them, are kicking my butt!

Myself, I'd be hesitant about injecting fat into my feet - just because there's the possibility that something could go wrong.

I'm so sorry that your feet are causing you pain

Thx Sagan. I have seen this in a medical show as I wrote in another comment specific for aging & they take the fat from your own body.. I will keep researching first!

Ouch Jody, I am sorry your going through foot pain. I know all to well how painful that is!

Inserts hurt my Neuropathy abundantly too. They IMHO are a big hipe!

Have you seen the doctor about this? I am glad switching machines helped because its torcher not to be able to do the exercises we love.

My only recommendation is time off. Give yourself a few weeks (I know I am sorry) and then use your new treadmill and see if the pain comes back.

    Best of luck friend!

Hi Sheri - thx for your concern.... actually, I have stayed off them for a few days but the issue is that with no padding, once I get started again, well, it just starts up again.. I need fat there!

Have you tried Vibrams? I know it may seem counter-intuitive "barefoot" running when you think you need more protection and at first it will take some getting used to but they are supposed to promote a more natural running style. I would recommend trying this out before doing the injections. I hope
    you feel better soon.

Heather, thank you so much for commenting! I do know about those Vibrams.. the thing with this issue is that when it gets bad, well, even walking barefoot on carpet hurts so it is more about getting the pressure off that area OR getting more fat put in! Thx for sharing!

Can't say I have heard of such a fat injection procedure let alone tried it. I've had my share of foot pain over the years and getting medical attention is something I do readily because I'm not happy when the feets are a hurtin. If a doc said to me I needed to inject pat in them, I'd consider it seriously. Research the dickens out of it to since it seems extreme. Hope you find the answers you are looking for.

I certainly have noticed the same thing with our fitness center treadmills! The newer ones have a much more forgiving deck to run on.

Maybe I'll learn something from the comments as this is a difficult problem for many people. Most podiatrists just use pads for this, but that's for walking, not running.

Dr. J, that is so true!!!!! And yes, the pads do not work..... I have seen specific shows on this procedure & they explain that it is for older people that lose the fat padding there.... even though the younger ones do it so they can wear those very high heels...

Jody - with regards to the inserts, were those over the counter or custom orthotics you tried. Huge difference and might be worthwhile $$$ wise for you to get some professionally fitted.

I also will say this, as much as you might like running, it may not be for you any more. I am going through that right now and have not run for the past 5 weeks. My body is much better for that, but I still struggle with the guilt that I should be running.

I have bought some "semi custom" ones for my feet - the ones where you get on that contraption that measures all the hot points in your feet & they make the inserts from that.. but the real issue is that I just need more fat in that area. I can still feel the probs even with less impact types of activity so I am researching...

I am NOT a runner =) At all!!! So I'm afraid I'm no use.

If you do want to switch up cardio workouts though I recommend high incline walking...set your speed to 3.0 and taper up to a high incline (at least 12%) -- it'll be really challenging I promise!

Ah, Sable, you are stealing from part of my post for next week.. I will keep it secret BUT, yes, I already had been incorporating hill walking as part of my treadmill workouts in the past.... I don't just run on them... I also do the hill walking & hill jogging on them BUT I have added something else - more next week! Although, the walking still hurts the no fat pad area... ;-(
