Influencing Children; MizFit & Fila

Wednesday March 30, 2011

First, let's all send a HUGE CONGRATS to Carla of MizFit who won the people's choice award for the The New Face of Fila Contest. Way deserving!!!!!

Second, Fila extended the deadline for submissions until April 8th AND changed the rules. So, other semi finalists will not be known until at least April 11th. I was pretty disappointed with this change as I worked hard to get a good video in on time & per the rules. I was debating withdrawing BUT I have decided not to. They are allowing those that have already entered to also submit a photo & 400 more words! Might as well..... right Carla! I have my Fit at 53 photo!

Thx so much to all that voted for me. No voting for this part BUT if you want to say nice things about me at my video page OR on their FB page, please do!

You MUST check out this clip from The Today Show. I had recorded the 4th hour Monday & was watching it and saw what I will talk about below.

I am sure most of you have seen some of the crazy shows on cable TV these days. One that really irks me is Toddlers & Tiaras which they describe as - "Toddlers and Tiaras follows families on their quest for sparkly crowns, big titles, and lots of cash". I know some love this show but when I see some of the behind footage & what the parents are "teaching" these kids at such a young age, well, to me, just not liking it as they say!

Back to the clip above - Kathie Lee & Hoda were discussing a lady (about 6 minutes in) who is a beautician that injects her 8 year old daughter with botox in the forehead, lips & eyes. In addition, she waxes the girls entire body. She does this because she wats her to become a super star. At about 7 minutes in, they are talking about bathing suits marketed for girls as young as 7 from Abercrombie that have padded tops! They used to call them a push-up triangle & now changed it to a striped triangle. An update on this story I heard after The Today Show story was that Abercrombie got so much flack that they have changed the advertising target to 12 years old BUT I did not hear that they stopped selling for the younger ones too.

I don't know.. this stuff just so worries me about the message we are still sending out to kids & that the parents are encouraging it as well.

I am leaving this open for discussion & want your thoughts on this. Me - I think the wrong message. I want the message as I said in my video & that my granddaughter said - being strong & healthy!

OK, throw out your thoughts on this!!!

Frankly, my opinion is that was a form of abuse what that woman did to her child and so is those beauty pagents you see on TV. They make me sick.

    Let kids be kids!

Sheri - scary for kids these days when the parents don't protect them or teach them...

    IMO, that's child abuse.

From what I understand, A&F is no longer marketing their push-up bikini to children, but they're still selling it. I wish I had shopped there so I could boycott them.

That tiara show was on the TV at the gym one mornign and I was just horrified at what all the mom's were doing. Only one of the little girls on the show was doing it for fun...the rest all seemed driven by mothers making them look like they're 18 when they're about 7. And botox? On a kid? That should not even be allowed...It was just so sad that people will do this to themselves or their kids...
Kids should get to be kids.

Maybe it's because I grew up as a pudgy tomboy, but my mum never did any of that crazy princess girly stuff. She just told us to get out and play and use our imaginations...

I totally agree -- I think those shows are kind of scary. I mean, with all the pedophiles and weirdos out there, what the heck are we doing *sexualizing* little girls?
