Food Consequences; Wristband Winner
Karen from Waisting Time wrote an interesting post on eating & these foods that trigger us & make us crazy & we just can't stop once we start ... BUT another larger point in her post, one I feel compelled to discuss - yes again - as I have before - is the whole, I lost the weight & now I can eat again syndrome. Sheri from Motivation for Health & Fitness has also written about this in the past too. It seems like a common thread out there!
I have heard many discuss this & I have read it on many blogs - the thinking that once we get to a certain goal in weight loss that we can ease up & just starting eating all those things again that put the weight on us in the first place.
Now I am going to say this up front right now cause I know people will comment on this: I am NOT saying that you can't eat those foods ever again that you "love to hate". Those foods that put the weight on you.
I AM saying that you have to learn to eat certain foods in moderation - plan for them I guess you can say. If it is a food that you just can't stop eating, maybe the best course of action is to keep it out of the house & only eat it as a buy one out & about & stop there.
We all know that you can gain weight eating too much of anything whether it be a "healthy food" or not. Easing up after you lost the weight to maintenance level is fine but what people fail to recognize is as they "ease up", they often let their guard down & then 1 or 2 or 3 months down the line, well, 5 or 7 pounds are back on you. If you ignored the way the clothes fit or what the scale was saying then multiple months of this will have the weight back on you - just as all the statistics say about how many people put the weight back on after they lose it.
When I went into weight loss, even as young as I was, I knew there was no going back. I was going to have to learn to eat better & yes, less food since I was eating too much of everything including a lot of treat foods. I knew that this had to be a new way of eating for me for life. I also knew that I was going to have to incorporate some form of exercise for life as well. Heck, it is good for you to move more no matter what "play" is your choice of exercise.
So, since my high school years when I lost my weight, I have been learning how to eat better (as I did it wrong way back when) & I have included movement all thru those years to now. As I have always written on my blog, I AM A WORK IN PROGRESS ALWAYS. There is always something new to learn and life, age & lots more have made me diligent & making sure I never go backwards.
How about you? Have you had that time when you eased up too much? What are your life experiences & how can you help others by telling us?

I can't agree with you more Jody! I like the "one stop and buy" option rather than bringing it home.
That reminds me of when I go out to pickup my medicine. Sometimes I will allow my choice of chocolate, but then I am done for a long time. There's no snacking and binging on that daily nor suffering in knowing its in your house.
Thanks so much for referring to my post! I am honored truly!

I read a study once about men and weight loss and maintaining where it yammered about how they lose and maintain better than we women because they rarely rarely eat 100 cal pack type things.
interesting huh?
to this misfit anyway

Very interesting & to me, makes sense. Not only the make up of some of the 100 calorie packs - sugar, white four & such BUT many can't stop at one...

I found for me that getting rid of the substitutes for things and just having less of the real stuff helped me out a lot.
I will go out and have a really good cupcake rather than make a batch at home of some low-fat, FF thing which I then have 18 of in the house.

I hear you Lori - me too! I eat the whole foods & stuff at home & then go out on the weekend for my treat cookies! I don't eat the FF or low fat treats like 100 calorie packs as Carla mentioned in her comment.

Would it surprise you to read that I wholeheartedly agree? And I thought I had this figured out, more than once, when I was at or near my goal weight in the past. If I eat what I used to eat I will weigh what I used to weigh. But knowing and doing are not the same. And the slippery slope is insidious! I am still trying to picture my future and what I will eat and what I will want to eat and what I will be "able" to eat. Not Poptarts for sure! And we have those in our house right now!

Karen, I have changed things along the way even when I wa eating healthy so it will fall into place - you can do it!

I think the main reason the literature says that diets do not work is that these statistics are for the most part, made up of people who lose weight then go back to eating like the way that put the weight on in the first place. rather than learn a new lifestyle of balance and moderation.

Dr. J - yup, it is all abut a lifestyle change! What I do is just my life day to day. I am not on a diet or a plan.. just my life...

When I began eating healthy, I kind of gave up those love to hate foods cold turkey. For me, it was doing no good. I was not the type of person to just have "a little" or "one bite", just couldn't do it. I had to get a new "normal" before I could allow myself "treats" again. But I agree, we're all a work in progress, and I think different things work for different people.

Lesley - I like that - a new normal. I don't consider myself on a diet & have not for many many years. This is just the way I eat....

In the end, it is get rid of the processed stuff and if you do need a treat..bake it yourself and enjoy one and freeze the rest ; ) My fav is my banana walnut loaf with whole wheat flour! YUM!

Sian - in agreement!!! Love banana bread but not the walnuts. I know they are good for you but just not my thing....

Wooohoo! =) I emailed you my mailing address. So excited!
When I lost weight *just* by dieting down several years ago, I did wind up putting it all back on and THEN some because I fell into the trap of "Oh, now I've hit my goal weight, diet over!" The most recent time however I realized that it's a LIFESTYLE not a DIET...I still eat chocolate from time to time (love kettle korn popcorn with chocolate chips mixed in!) but I "budget" it into my calories.

Sable, glad you got it back together - a learning lesson! I do the same - plan it in! Loved your post today!

The simple carbs are like crack! The less processed foods are filling and don't cause a craving for more.

Tami - you are right. I don't eat hardly any processed foods...

"I lost the weight & now I can eat again syndrome" is what I'm dealing with right now. It would be so easy to just eat whatever again. So tempting...thankfully my husband is with me on the eating well thing. We try and catch each other when we get out of control. Most of my friends don't eat healthy, so it's a struggle. I've learned to bring things along for me to have, but occasionally I make delicious food I can't resist...I'm learning to take those irresistable things to events with me and share them when Ido make them (stupid delicious cupcakes I made on sunday...*sigh*
I find those processed snacks just make me more hungry than when I started. I've never really had a sweet tooth -I'm more a carbs and salt lady. I'm trying to find my own muffins/snacks instead that fill me up. I'm getting building up the recipe box!

Geosomin, I always bring my food with me even if healthy will be there to be safe. I like to know I have options for what is right for me. My friends & family are used to it now. Maybe your healthy ways will wear off on some of them!
