Self-Worth; fitbook Winner

Monday February 28, 2011

Before I start, I forgot to add something to my recipe adaption from Friday's post. Since I make this recipe into bars, not cookies, I take the batter & put it in an 8x8 pan & bake for 20 minutes at 350 degrees. Do NOT over bake! Since ovens are different, keep an eye on it!

One of the biggest battles in weight loss could be how we view ourselves. I already posted about negative self-talk last week which is a sure fire way of distracting us from our health & fitness goals.

Our self worth or lack thereof most often leads right to this negative talk. Here are some definitions I found of self worth:

*dignity: the quality of being worthy of esteem or respect

*respect for or a favorable opinion of oneself

*the sense of one's own value or worth as a person; self-esteem; self-respect

Have any of you watched Your OWN Show on the new Oprah Network? I think a few of our fellow bloggers tried out for this show. There has been a lot of bashing of this show in the comments. Me, I like it. It shows me how much goes on behind the scenes and as the old saying goes to those that bash it - easier said than done. Looks pretty hard to make your own show!

One of the contestants, Zach Anner, has cerebral palsey. He has had it since birth. He has an amazing sense of humor & ease about himself. He wants to do a show
"to travel the world and highlight the trials that ensue to show how anyone confined to a wheelchair can overcome any obstacle."

Zach also said something that hit home with me. He said and I am paraphrasing here: It is hard to accept that I am worth this. - I AM worth it!

His competition for the winning show was Kristina & she also battled self worth issues all her life. At the end & before they announced the winner, she said - no matter what, I have learned that I am worth it!

Friday was the last episode and Oprah decided to give BOTH of them their own show. I was glad to see this as they both did a great job with their 3 minute version of what their show would be for the viewers AND they both learned they really do deserve good things coming their way!

Self worth, to me, is a life long journey. I know I have battled this all my life - like an elusive butterfly. When you grow up not feeling good about yourself for whatever reason, it is hard to get to the point of feeling good about yourself and feeling you are deserving & worthy to have good things happen to you. I fought it back when and I am still fighting it & yes, it can & does hold us back from our full potential. All we can do is keep trying to like & love ourselves and know that we are worthy & deserving of good things including losing weight. Yes, you deserve it & no reason to sabotage yourself when you get close to your goal!

What are you thoughts on this & have you fought it is as well? Have you kicked your self doubts to the side of the road & if yes, how were you able to do it? If not, what are you doing to try to get over the "I am not worthy" thought process. OK, I just have to say when I wrote that, Wayne's World came to mind!

By the way, one of the definitions above mentioned RESPECT. Respect of ourselves and others. Check out the Dr. J column on RESPECT!

    Great message here, Jody!!

I suppose I'm like a broken record, but the best way to build self-"fill in the blank," is to do something. The only way to get past words is to achieve something with our actions.

I watched it. I love those type of shows, like the next Food Network Star or Design Star. I like the competitions better than the shows that come with winning. I was very impressed with Zach's spirit and humor and liked Kristina from the start. Hated how some of the contestants were clearly throwing each other under the bus.

Karen, I agree. I disliked that back stabbing part.. it is a tough arena to succeed in & I am sure this is how many survive - the survival of the toughest.. UGH!

This is a toughie for me. For all my life I hated myself for being fat. Then I hated myself for getting Adult On-set Diabetes (Type 1). Then I went into lying to myself saying this is it, you can't exercise and you can't lose weight because of your disease.

Well, thanks to the changing of my mind I was able to turn all that around. Once I lost weight, my body started rewarding me with less pain and sickness. Then my biggest self-sabotage was getting over the "I am fat" comments in my head.

The way I am working on it is not weighing so frequently. The scale to me is a big downer and no matter how hard I am working out and changing my life if it didn't fall suite I'd hate myself. So, I had to take it out of my regular regiment. It has helped me and now I can see through MY eyes what I look like and not a stupid scale.

I am still struggling with self worth. Seems like just when I'm confident about one aspect of myself, I lose confidence in another...very frustrating. But I am a work in progress and that -- self confidence and self worth -- is my major focus point of this year.

    Loved this post!

Hi Jody, thank you so much for this post. I go in phases, sometimes I feel super strong and other times (like the last couple of weeks) I've been really hard on myself. Your words make me wake up and see I AM worth all these ups and downs this journey is taking me on...Have a GREAT day!!!
