Self-Talk & How It Holds Us Back

Tuesday February 22, 2011

First, thx for all your great comments yesterday! Loved them!

I have a question for you all: If you track your calories & the percentage of protein/carbs/fat too, which site do you think does the best job, is easiest to use, economical & just why you think it is a good tracking tool? I got a reader question on this & thought it was a great question to ask here.

On to day 2 of "link love week" & subjects that make me think!

I have posted quite a bit on negative self talk. Here is just one of them. This one was about Operation Beautiful - "The goal of the Operation Beautiful website is to end negative self-talk..... and help readers realize how truly toxic negative self-talk is — it hurts you emotionally, spiritually, and physically."

In this post, I referenced an article I read & part of it said this:
"Most of us wouldn’t dream of speaking to another human being like that. But we have no problem routinely addressing ourselves in a disrespectful, even demeaning, way. And if you’re choosing to lose weight, those voices make slimming down, or any kind of change, difficult or even agonizing."

This negative self talk needs to be addressed by any of us using it, me included & I do. Well, Dr. J wrote a great post, Turning Words Into Action: How to Fight Negative Thoughts With Positive Actions & of course I have to link to him, my partner in crime for my tag team posts! He has a very interesting take on this. Here is a short bit:

"It’s not the negative self talk that is stopping us, it’s the lack of positive actions in our life. It seems to me that it is not so much our words that are the problem, it’s our lack of doing anything about our harmful situation that’s hurting us. Unfortunately, inaction with progressing problems can be even more harmful.... Until we can move from self-talk to self-action, whether the talk is positive or negative, our talk will only be so much noise."

Dr. J has a lot more to say & you have to read the full post to understand why he wrote the above.. read it HERE. Even if you don't agree with him, it really is a very interesting take on this subject matter!

I sort of wrote a book in my comment to him but here is a little of it:

Like you Dr. J, even with all my negative self talk & there was plenty then & I hate to say now, I still tried out for sports in school & drill team & cheerleading & made those teams & sports & yet the negative continued. I lost weight in high school & then in my 30′s & beyond learned more & became fitter & did a bodybuilding contest all with the negative self talk still going…I am pretty sure I have mastered the action part in my health & fitness life but it is the job world where the words still hold me back…. I keep trying though.

It is amazing how we hold ourselves back just with words..... Read this & Dr. J  then leave me or him or both of us a comment with your thoughts and how you feel about it all.

Are words & thoughts holding you back?

Dr. J has lots of great posts so take a read of them!!!

Hello, I just found your site via your comment on Rachael's Treadmill Truth. Had to stop by and say "hi", tell you that I've bookmarked your blog and will visit often. I'm in my late 40's and aspire to being as fit and healthy as you are. Thanks so much for the motivation and inspiration.

I use Livestrong.com/dailyplate usually on the iPhone app. So much better than the website itself.

What you said about how we'd never talk as disrespectfully to others as we do to ourselves really hit me. If only we'd make an effort to address ourselves with the positive comments and compliments we give others we could really lift ourselves up.

I actually track everything I eat in a plain old notebook... each time I make a meal I weigh everything out and track how many carbs, grams of protein and grams of fat are in each meal. At the end of the day I add carbs+protein and multiply by 4, and multiply fats by 9, to get my total daily calories. Much easier that way.

I have been doing a lot of thinking about negative self talk lately...thanks for this post and link!

I've accomplished a lot with positive thought, but I do backslide from time to time. What I've learned is...that it's OKAY to wonder or doubt. What matters most is what I DO. And in almost every single instance, by the time I've finished DOING, those doubts or fears have miraculously vanished.

I like to track using livestrong.com - it is free (always a plus), but you can pay if you want ad free (considering). I like that pretty much every food under the sun is already in there and you can group common foods together to create meals, saving time when logging stuff you eat all the time.

Negative talk? I really don't do that anymore and it makes me very happy

I am making a conscious effort to turn any negative self talk around into positive thoughts or actions. I have realized that my past negative self talk have been self defeating and powerful. I have taken that power back and will not let my negative thoughts control my actions or my emotions.

I use livestrong daily plate for my tracking.

    Great post!

Your comment to me reminded me of a patient of mine. She was born with a bilateral cleft lip/ palate! I saw her just after her high school graduation to do a secondary cleft repair, and full facial reconstruction of both the upper and lower jaws! The thing was this, even though she didn't look too good growing up, she was in her school marching band, playing the clarinet, and many many other activities. She never let her looks stop her. I am very happy to report that after the surgery she had the good looks to go along with her more important great attitude!

    PS Nice spell checker here
