Diet & Weight Loss - Obvious Tip!

Thursday February 17, 2011

I have put plenty of weight loss and "diet" tips on my posts. Of course some of my favorites are consistency, patience, change, planning...

But I have also talked about REMOVING foods from the house that are what they call "trigger foods". Foods that you just can't seem to control yourself from the ole overeating.. the once you get a taste, you just keep on eating... or drinking too, I guess!

Of course, at some point we have to learn to deal with situations that are out of our control BUT if you can make your house a safe haven for you to at least keep you on the best track - why not do it! No denials, no excuses! Clean out the house of those certain foods that you just can't say no to - RIGHT AFTER READING THIS! OK, comment first & then throw it out!

Another area of REMOVAL - and I have to say this.... PEOPLE! Saboteurs! If you have friends or coworkers that are sabotaging you, you are going to have to set them straight & if they do not want to support you, well, all I can say is your best chance for success is to remove yourself from the bad situation or remove them from your life at least for now.

Granted, people living in your home, well, you can't remove them but I say, again, put it straight to them in black & white - IF THEY DO NOT WANT TO SUPPORT YOU IN THIS EFFORT THEN DON'T SAY ANYTHING AT ALL!

Maybe with time they will turn over a new leaf but if not, in the interim, use your supportive friends & family to help you thru this. Make a list of people willing to let you reach out and/or call them during tough times at home.

Removal of trigger foods and trigger people will be a big step in helping you thru this. The support group discussed above is crucial as well.

Have you had to remove people from your life due to sabotage or no support in your weight loss efforts. Have you done the "clean out the house of trigger foods" thing? Let us know how it worked.

PS: I wrote about workout shoes here but then this article, 5 Mistakes When Choosing Workout Shoes, showed up in my inbox the next day so give it a read. Good info!

You tell it like it is! I have had times where I have had to purge the pantry of trigger items.

I have learned that with some foods it is easier for me to not even start eating certain foods because it is too difficult to stop!

Tami - I have just a few that I have to keep out of the house. Most, I am able to get thru it but for the couple I can't, better safe than sorry!

As you know from reading my posts, Jody, I try to keep our home a no-snack-foods zone. I tell my husband to eat anything he wants -- but not in the house. This works about 99% of the time but every once in a while he caves and buys a bag of potato chips. Since I'm not a potato chip eater, it isn't a problem for me.

You are so right to call this to everyone's attention, Jody. There have been many days that, if we had treats in the house, I would eat every single bit of it, even if it were 2 pounds of cookies, and especially if it were a quart of ice cream.

I do not keep anything unhealthy for me around my kitchen. Nothing. If I have a cheat day (which I haven't since I began contest prep) I throw everything out afterwards. My roommate keeps a TON of junk around but it doesn't phase me because it's hers and we keep our food in our own cabinets

Not to mention looking at junk food makes me cringe now that I have been eating clean for 14 weeks straight!

Joob, I will throw something out too if I think I am going to eat too much!

Oh I definitely have saboteurs here at work. They are always trying to tempt me with food. Quitting isn't an option, so I just tell them "why would I want to eat like you and gain all my weight back and be unhealthy?" Usually that shuts them up. Sometimes you have to insult them back to get your point across you don't want any of their sticking food!

Sheri - work is one of the hardest places - food everywhere & candy on desks... a mine field! This is place that you have to learn how to deal with it by saying NO!

Not with fitness because I can "run" away from those, but with other areas of my life. I have kicked negative people to the curb when their constant depressive droning was weighing me down!

I wish I could do this. But it just would not be fair to my husband and son. Right now I am thinking about the cereal my husband has. He should be able to have cereal I shouldn't be thinking about his cereal. But I am. Sigh.

Oh my gosh, I SO agree with you. I think it's important to take a good hard look every now and then at whether the people in your life are helping you better yourself or dragging you down. It's hard to do, but vital to success in all areas of life!

I love dark chocolate and ice cream but try to only keep tiny amounts around. I'm really good about going to a gourmet shop and getting a little of either one then I'm satisfied and it's not in my house. Problem is I got pounds of chocolate gifts between my b-day and V-Day last week...

This is a tough subject. As you know, my wife sometimes has things in our house that are tempting for me. In fact, sometimes she has purchased things for me that she knows I enjoy, but I really shouldn't eat. Sabotage? Yes. Does she mean harm? I don't think so. Thankfully this is not the same problem it once was.
