Workout Shoes - Fit Is It

Womens Nike Zoom Vomero+ 5 Running Shoe

“It is an amazing thing, the difference to one’s powers of concentration a pair of comfortable shoes can make.”
Laurie R. King

Hopefully you all know how important a good fitting pair of shoes SPECIFIC to your sport or exercise choice is to allow you the best workout experience with less chance of injury. Wearing the wrong shoes OR wearing them beyond their life cycle can be a recipe for disaster! I can always tell if I have not been paying attention to when it is time to replace my shoes - my knees start to hurt! Never fails! They break down & the support I need is not there, even though I buy specific inserts for my very bad feet (that are getting worse & worse with age)!!!

I have gone to Road Runner Sports for years. I joined their store VIP program because you can return the shoes within 60 days if they don't work for you. You also get a 10% discount on shoes & other items in their stores! I joined the in store program but they also have an online VIP club that you can check out HERE. The one thing I have heard about the online joining is that if you want to cancel your credit card payment for it, some people have had probs but I think less than more. You might want to talk with their customer service about that.

This program has been a savior to me with wide, flat & overpronating feet with bunions. Even though we all should try on the shoes we are buying every time, some people just purchase the same shoe they did last time & don't think about it.

I have found that even if the style is not updated, the way they manufacture it from year to year may change. I have found shoes that got narrower one year to the next with no update in the model. Also, our feet change over time & with age too.

This pair above, the Nike Zoom Vomero+ 5, has cut outs for bunions, wide in the forefoot for me & fairly narrow at the heel which I need. I first bought an Asics pair that felt fine running in on the treadmill in the store. Once I got in the gym & used them for a couple weeks, I found they hurt - there was material that rubbed against my bunions & I had to return them... had that great return policy!

Once I had to do this twice & another time I returned them after 30 days just because that is when the issues showed up.

Now, it may sound like I do this all the time - I DON'T!!! It is just that for me, I have very difficult feet to fit & this has really saved me.. and heck, I get a discount on the shoes & clothes & everything else in the store!

So, just be sure that you try your shoes on every time you buy & get the return policy. Shoes are a VERY IMPORTANT part of your workout & if they do not not fit right, can lead to injury!!!!

Check the link below to see all the great finds on the Road Runner Sports site! I can get a little reward if you end up buying something from my link but I DO NOT work for this company nor am I paid in any way to write this - although I wish I was paid! I just have had luck with the return policy & the discount I get on things I buy from them. Never hurts to get a discount!!!!

I am learning a new appreciateion for shoes, their fit and function. Being a bit hard headed about fashion and all I have never seen shoe fit to be that big of a deal. Certainly nothing worth making a stink about. When i was really active when younger it didnt seem to matter what was on my feet, my feet were just fine with it. But now older and regaining activity losy for a long time, my feet are more 'finiky' as to how comfortable they are with all I do now. Spring is coming, and a new pair of shoes may be in my near future,

I got to a local "running" store to be fitted for my workout shoes. For years, they have been putting me in running shoes even though I don't run. Better for my arches, I guess. I will then order the next time online to save money. We used to do Road Runner; my husband loved it.

When I started having feet issues about 8 years ago I also started buying my everyday shoes at a specialty store. Expensive. Now that I know the brands/styles that work, I try to find them online to save money and for a better selection.

I hate spending a lot on shoes but will do it. My cute and inexpensive shoe days are over.

Karen, some of the local running stores are great alternatives! We have a few around here too! They usually know their stuff! Like you, I pay for what fits me right when it comes to shoes!

I can tell when my shoes need to be replaced because I start getting shin splits. That is also how I can tell if my shoes are not right for me - I get shin splints. I can usually tell by looking at the shape of a shoe if it will fit my foot. Although I like Nike, they do not hold up well and often have other characteristics, like not being consistent, that mean, for me, that I end up not liking them. I don't like to take things back, but I should do it more often. I finally found running shoes that have worked for me two years in a row. Pearl Izumi Peak XC. I can put these shoes on right out of the box and there is absolutely no break-in period for me. No blisters, nothing. I have a high arch so they are a little big in the arch, but I found if I do the laces up to the very last loop (higher up on the foot) it has taken care of the "too roomy" problem. I don't think they are great for anything other than running. In Zumba class I use one of the Nike Zoom models because they allow sliding and such, but they broke down on the sides almost immediately (you can actually see my socks poking out through the sides, but I don't mind because it's not important for Zumba).

KArma, thx for that very comprehensive comment! This is my first pair of Nikes. I have never found a pair that fit me before. This time around, I needed more room for my bunions & they were the only ones, at least at my store, that had that cutout plus wide forefoot & narrower heel. I am pretty hard on shoes so we shall see....

Back when I first started blogging in July, 2010 I wrote about the new shoes I bought. http://marsial2010.blogspot.com/2010/07/197-new-low-for-2010-also-my-new-shoes.html

I only wear them inside the house for walking exercise, but I should get another pair for outdoors because I still LOVE them!! For me, they are the most comfortable pair of sneaks I've ever owned.

Marsial, if when you bought these, they were a "walking shoe" which usually would mean walking outside, you should be OK. If you do trail walking, walking in hilly/mountain type areas often for exercise or something more like that, you might want to invest in a shoe made for that type of walking.

It is so amazing how much a pair of shoes can make the biggest difference. I know that my favorite shoes and I barely ever part. They are almost like a big sweatshirt when I feel crummy. If I need motivation to keep going and get out for a run, they are always there for me.

This is great information. I hate dealing with shoes. I have wide feet and can usually only wear ADIAS or New Balance. I have issues with my feet going numb when I am on a machine at the gym. It is awful! I am going to check this out. Thanks

Rachael, I was wearing NB before these but apparently when they upgraded the model I was wearing, it became to narrow for my bunions & wide feet. I understand that there are a number of shoes by different manufacturers that have that bunion cut out. You might want to check them out in a store & then see if you can buy them online for a better price.

    Hi Jody!
Several years ago I discovered Asics shoes, and I fell in love. They are perfect for my feet and even helped heal my plantar fasciitis!

Once I got my toe bones shaved, I quit having problems with my feet. Well worth the pain and inconvenience, although I'd never have said so in the months following the surgery.

Cammy, if I had the money, I would have bunion surgery & that procedure to put fat back in my forefoot.. one of the few places we want fat! There is a newer bunion procedure done at UCLA that is way better & way less down time!
