Giveaway! The Life You Want by Bob Greene
I mentioned in THIS POST that I was reading The Life You Want by Bob Greene. Bob also has psychologist Anne Kearney-Cooke, PhD and nutritionist Janis Jibrin, MS, RD assist with writing the book. It is more a book about helping you through the emotional & mind battles versus a step by step plan for what to eat & which exercises to do. He wants to help you weed thru the emotional barriers that block you from losing the weight & not exercising as well... what is holding you back from achieving that healthy lifestyle.Bob wants people to know that you are not wired to fail as some people may think. If we put in the hard work, commit to that lifestyle change in incremental steps, we can live the life we want as the title so aptly points out!
If you are looking to read about things that you do or say to yourself now or things that may have happened in your past that are blocking your way to losing weight, exercising & living a healthy emotional & physical life , this is a good read! For me, many things hit home that I never thought about & others, yes, I knew they had been blockers for me in the past. Actually, I still have some of the issues in the book but I guess my willpower or willingness as MizFit says, is a stronger motivator than the food to me. I can say that I love myself more than I love the food that makes me unhealthy.
The book is broken into 7 chapters:
1. Barriers to Weight Loss
2. Overcoming Emotional Eating
3. Rewiring Your Sugar - Fat - Salt Loving Brain
4. Conquering Exercise Aversion
5. Transforming Your Body Image
6. Maintaining Weight Loss - What Works & What Does Not
7. Being Happy
I think many of us can definitely relate to the emotional eating & this chapter has a lot of information to get you thinking through why you may emotionally eat along with steps to help you past it. There are lots of real life examples as well as written exercises to help you think break through your own emotional barriers.
AND many of us have read about on the blogs or read the book by David Kessler on the addictive nature of foods - how companies will load them with a certain % of fat, salt & sugar that keeps us coming back for more! Bob Greene mentions Kessler in this book in chapter 3 which I am sure many of you will be interested to read as well! Again, we all know how food has changed over the years from whole foods to packaged & frozen crap filled with sugar, fat & salt. READ LABELS! And portion sizes have increased dramatically! It is a great chapter about the whys of overeating & as many of you read about in the Kessler book, the high we get from food filled with fat, sugar & salt and what you can do to change your thinking & eating habits. Bob writes:
"One government study says that women are taking in 308 calories more per day compared to 1971, and men are consuming 162 more calories.... adding up to an extra 17-30 pounds a year. Plus consider that most people underestimate their calorie intake, it is likely we are taking in even more calories that that." I have to agree with that statement!
There is also an exercise chapter that talks about how to get over that aversion to exercise & all the excuses we make up for ourselves. He challenges you to find a reason to exercise & even gives a list to choose from to help you get started on that thinking! This chapter discusses cardio, strength training & functional fitness including stretching as part of your routine. He works to show you how it CAN be fit into your day. It is all about getting you engaged in doing something.
In general, I think this is a great read for those battling the mental part of losing weight & changing your lifestyle to a healthier one. Tools & exercises are included to work you thru some of the barriers in a measured way.. and to get you moving to that lifestyle change as you work thru your own issues.
I read one review from a mental health person that felt those with very deep-seated emotional issues would require one on one counseling & of course I agree with that BUT reading this book may spur that person to seek out that help!

Ooh - me! Me! And used is fine
Do you watch the new show "Harry's Law?" In a recent episode a woman was suing the fast food industry and the lawyer pretty much used that Kessler stuff as his case.
