hhweektake the quiz

1. GO RED for Women:

From Fitness & Spice: Heart disease is still the leading killer of women–taking the life of 1 in 3 women every year.
This year, fitlosophy, inc. is sponsoring the second annual Blog Your Heart Out campaign to support the American Heart Association’s efforts to create awareness about heart disease and ways we can detect and help prevent the disease. So for 5 weeks, 5 bloggers (including yours truly) will be blogging our hearts out about heart disease and asking you to help us by telling 5 friends in your network about some free life saving resources that can be downloaded at GO RED FOR WOMEN

Sahar over at Fat Fighter TV is also blogging about this. Sahar wrote this:
Did you know heart disease is still the number one killer of women? Did you know it takes the lives of one in three women each year? I know. It took my mom’s life. The stats will forever be etched in my mind.

Please read both posts for more info
!

February 4th (TODAY) is National Wear Red Day & February 11th is Blog Your Heart Out day! Read more at the link!

2. World Cancer Day: From LIVESTRONG:

The truth is, we can’t win the fight against cancer unless we know what we’re facing. That’s why on World Cancer Day—Friday, February 4—LIVESTRONG and our partners all over the world are working to raise awareness and shine a spotlight on the global challenge of cancer.

Support this effort by taking the quiz and sharing it.

3. In addition, Lori is having a Bloggers Healthy Heart Weekend! It is a virtual run/walk & PRIZES can be won too!!!!

Direct from Lori's post:

First off, you don’t have to run if you are unable to. I just want this to be a focus on getting healthy. If you want to walk, that’s fine. Elliptical bunny? Knock yourself out! Take a long bike ride? Go for it! The only stipulation is that you need to take a picture of yourself before, during, or after your event and send it to me. I will post the pictures here. Get creative, too! You don’t have to have your face in the photo if you don’t want to.

Date: Just before Valentine’s, of course! February 11th, 12th, and 13th! Feel free to chose Friday, Saturday, or Sunday to complete your event.

Distance: Your choice. I think most people standard a 5k, but I know many of you are training for an event, so you can use whatever distance fits in with your training plan. It’s all about a healthy heart, not a specific distance. Extra kudos to anyone who bikes 100 miles in 1 day, though!!

The good news? There are some prizes to be awarded! These will be chosen randomly from those that submit entries.

So, you have to go over to Lori's
POST HERE & let her know you are included, read the rest of the directions & see the prizes.

I am going to take a pic BUT she said we don't have to include the face & at the hour I run, well, the face will be missing but I will get some of the bod in there!

Let's show LOVE for Heart Health by wearing red on the 4th and blogging about it on the 11th!!!

Let's all raise awareness for the global challenge of cancer.

AND
all of you, sign up & plan for your exercise for Lori's virtual run/walk weekend & have fun!

I'm wearing red today not only for the day, but we're doing an AHA fundraiser at work, so we get to wear red!!

When I was in the hospital last week, an ultrasound showed at age 37 (not that having diabetes wasn't bad enough) that I have plaque buildup in my arteries and will have to start seeing a cardiologist after the baby is born. It's scarey to think that I have what most people don't see until well into or past their 50's. Red is the color for diabetes and heart disease awareness... I might have to change my whole wardrobe to red just to keep the advocacy alive! Thank you so much for your awareness and your post Jody. Love you!

So I am chuckling because I don't own anything red. Nothing. Guess it comes with the freckles and "red" hair. Love this cause and will check out your links. I am very aware of this killer since my dad died of heart disease in his early 50s putting me at increased risk. Thanks for promoting it.

Of course as a physician I am aware of the prevalence of heart disease! Education is the first step, and I'm glad that the emphasis is being placed on this. Of course we have been trying this for years and sorry to say, without real societal changes in behaviors, the problem will continue to worsen. So hopefully, Jody, your strident message will reach a few individuals and they will make changes in their lives and defy the statistics.

Thank you so much Rachael!!! I so appreciate that. You know, my mom's mane is Rachel but she is no longer with me. If you check out my side bar at the bottom, it talks about the cancer that took her life...
