Obesity/Heavy/Fat & Thoughts About It

Wednesday February 2, 2011

First I want to thank you all for the amazing comments to my post yesterday!!! You all had fantastic words of wisdom!!!!

Rickywayne from A&E's HEAVYJessica from A&E's HEAVY

So I watched the show Heavy last week & now have it set up to record when it comes on again. Bobbie wrote about it HERE. Bobbie has decided to no longer blog so check out her goodbye post. She will be missed! She was soooooooooo honest!

So anyway, this show is brutally amazing! I have been overweight but never obese. This show is letting me understand what I don't understand - how obese people really feel. No, I will never really know because I have not been there. I will continue to watch & learn the struggles people that are severely overweight go thru day in & day out... how hard it is to move & do day to day things. I have always had huge respect for those I read about that lost tremendous amounts of weight but now, a new found respect beyond that!

Now, saying all of the above, the person that is overweight did put themselves in that position but often the reasons behind it are extremely complicated & they need to dig themselves out of the mess. Check out my post tomorrow on a book that looks to help people get past their blocks to losing weight.

Anyway, I want to highlight some of the points made by the people on HEAVY  - and this came right from the shows I watched with Rickywayne & Jessica above:

1. Rickywayne said of himself: This is your problem. This is your body. You have to be the one to accept responsibility & start making the right choices.

From Jody - I love this as you all know with my tuff love year. But, yes, at some point, it comes down to taking responsibility for your own actions.

2. Rickywayne also said that the tools given to him to lose weight were his weapons to battle the war!

LOVE THAT!

3. Rickywayne had a star cast of enablers at home - a huge issue for many. He admits that every day is a fight but you have to want to grab it!

From Jody - I agree with this! No, I am not obese nor was I but I still feel that every day is a day I work to maintain & understand what is best for my body. As I have written before - I never went into losing weight with an end game in mind. I knew that I would always have to watch my food & move my body long term.

4. Jessica said that is is NOT about tomorrow. It is NOT about worrying about the past. IT IS ABOUT TODAY!

From Jody - Loving this too as I have written a lot about TODAY IS THE DAY no matter what day of the week or what time of year.

5. Can't remember who said this but it was said: I don't want a life of regrets!

From Jody - Who can't relate to that! I can relate on more ways that weight!

6. Jessica writes: “This was the hardest and most rewarding thing I have ever been a part of in my life. I owed it to myself to make a lifestyle change.”

From Jody - We all owe it to ourselves. Now the key is finding that program that works for you & baby steps can help.

7. From the newest episode I have not finished watching yet: THIS IS MY LIFE & THIS IS THE ONLY BODY I HAVE!

From Jody - Doesn't that say it all! Let's take care of that body!

AND my newest fav saying:

Success is in the sum of small efforts repeated day in & day out – Robert Collier

Can you take your first step today? What are you doing to make that little move forward which will lead to long term weight loss & a healthier lifestyle? You can do it!

Saw this after I wrote the post & wanted to share:

this show has been added to my list of weight loss shows. i know a lot of health ppl criticize Biggest Loser, but this is the same concept without the cash. put them in a controlled environment to teach, learn, ignite, and then let them back in the real world.

the 3 shows i've watched so far this season are remarkable, and i'm still a sap, crying when they make strides and progress and realize ... THEY CAN DO IT!!

great show, and thanks for the plug for tomorrow! that's awesome. never was aware of it!!!

Good information here. Once you get in the right mindset it all seems so much easier. It is difficult though to reach that point where you feel like I can do this!

I just keep working on my food plan and my exercise. Take it a day at a time.

Tami - yes, it is a mind game.... but you have to overcome that mind which is often one of the biggest hurdles! YES, a day at a time.. little steps lead to big results long term!

Honestly, I don't know what to make of these reality shows about losing weight. I can't watch them, but then I don't watch any reality shows except for The Ultimate Fighter, and even with that I fast forward through much of it.

Dr. J, the thing I like about this show is it is NOT a competition & kick off show. It is about real life & how to learn to make food & exercise choices along with life choices to reach attainable goals. They are given the tools in a controlled environment & then sent home but given trainers. If they are not able to handle it, they go back to the controlled environment again for more help before going home again.... no contests or game playing...

I'm not a big fan of reality TV. I think I've seen maybe two episodes of something here and there and that's it. Actually, the only things I watch on TV are the news and SNL.

I've seen the show too. I like that it seems to be so much more about instilling lifestyle change than Biggest Loser, which is so much about the contest. I'd love to see a follow-up of the participants. Have you watched "I used to be fat?" Seems like so many of these types of shows now. I read about another one coming too.
