IN MEMORY OF JACK LaLANNE. My first "view" of health & fitness before Jane Fonda. He will be missed!
I am sure many of you if not all of you have read about the passing of Jack LaLanne, often called "The Godfather of Fitness". He died at the age of 96 & had been helping people for nearly 80 years! A man way ahead of the times with his knowledge & love of health, fitness & healthy eating! A lot of blogs have posted about this & Joanna has a few tidbits at her place too.
Here are a few of some Jack LaLanne's sayings that I want to share. I remember him saying them all the time:
1. "Where have you been? You have put on some weight". From Jody - How many times have I written about CONSISTENCY!
2. "If you don't use it, you lose it". From Jody - Did I say CONSISTENCY??
3. "10 seconds on the lips, a lifetime on the hips!". From Jody - Think about it? Is it really worth eating "that"? Yes, we can treat ourselves but we can't eat everything we want all the time!
"Every mouthful contributes to the betterment of your fitness, health & physique."
4. "Exercise is king. Nutrition is queen". From Jody - I think these days, they might say both rule it!
5. Little tidbit - the jumping Jack was named after Jack LaLanne or so I heard that.
OK, now that we have read the above, how about a little exercise. Make sure your water is handy & you do 3-5 minutes of marching in place to warm up!
1. Seat squats per my previous computer exercising post or number 3 below.
2. Dumbbell shoulder presses with whatever you have handy for weights - anything that is the same weight for both hands. As many as you can in 30 seconds, rest 15-30 seconds & now do dumbbell lateral raises, as many as you can in 30 seconds.
3. Wall squats with or without a stability ball - as many as you can in 30 seconds. Rest & repeat. In the link, you see a medicine ball in between his legs - a cool option once you get the hang of it. OR, you can do wall sits with or without the stability or medicine ball trying for 30-60 seconds OR the seat squats in #1.
4. Close grip push-ups this way or this way to work the chest & triceps. As many as you can - rest & repeat.
5. Stretch & repeat later if you can!
Your thoughts on Jack LaLanne, his words of wisdom and my mini workout above.

Huh, did not know that the jumping Jack was named after Jack LaLanne. He was a legend, a pioneer; that simple.

I remember seeing Jack on TV commercials when I was younger, but never knew much about him. Wow he lived a long time and probably died gracefully of old age. I'll have to go read up about him how inspiring!

Of the numerous things I really liked about Jack was what a class act he was. He was always humble in his fame and kind and caring toward everyone he met. He set an example that no one else will ever reach, continually striving for perfection, always attaining excellence. He inspired and helped countless people during his lifetime.
If anything, I’m sure his wish for all of us would be to live the healthiest, fittest life we can imagine.
It seemed like he would live forever, but eventually, even the last leaf falls.
In the words of Dylan Thomas:
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Rest in peace, Jack, you have earned that, although part of me thinks that where ever he is, he is still doing push ups!

Jack is so cute! And definitely a great fitness icon. My mom has some of his older books from when he was young and showed some neat exercises in it!

I never thought I would live to see the day Jack Lalanne would die, which is to say I thought he would live past 180.
This was a great post Jody. Thanks.
