Diet Craziness! 500 Calories a Day-REALLY!??

Sorry to my east coast readers but this was the weather for me last weekend. I know, beautiful! Here in southern CA, we really had a weird summer with way cool temps for us & the beach days were few & far between for the poor people vacationing here. The we just got off record rain for us. Nothing like what you guys are going thru but it was nice to finally get some of the weather we want & live here for. We sacrifice the less people for the nicer weather & believe me, it is CROWDED where I live! Yes, we are babies when it comes to weather!
Anyway, back to the reason for this post. We all have beauty where we live whether it be the beach above or the beauty of autumn or the mountains. There is beauty everywhere. BUT, do you want to stay alive to see it?
I saw a segment on The Today Show on the HCG True Diet Craze. Really!!?? I know some people out there will argue with me but going on 500 calories a day & then taking these HCG drops or shots (to lose weight fast as a way encourage further weight loss - see below). A person can either inject themselves with this hormone or take a synthetic version & put drops under their tongue. The HCG is supposed to suppress the appetite so a person can stick with just 500 calories a day.
Sorry but I ain't eating just 500 calories a day even if it was safe!
The doctor/nutritionist from Yale on the segment made note that just like those crazy Medifast diets (all liquid diets) in the 70's, anything like this should be medically supervised & even then, people die. He said that you need all the essential amino acids carefully dosed out & without that, the body turns to your protein reserves & this can leach essential proteins from the heart & create rhythm disservice & cause death!
Is this really worth it for the quick fix!!??
The reasoning behind this craze diet is that people will lose weight faster & therefore be likely to stick with a "diet" since they are motivated by the weight loss. This is not a new concept & I have heard it out there lately BUT ya know what - as soon as you start eating more again, the weight comes on so friggin fast & many times you get all bloated too due to adding back in the foods you are not used to eating.
The definition of a diet per me, not the dictionary) - going on something & then off it when you are "done". You are NEVER done. THIS HAS TO BE A LIFESTYLE CHANGE. YOU HAVE TO FIND SOMETHING THAT WORKS FOR YOU LONG TERM!
How does this quick fix even teach you how to change your habits or eat healthier or better - IT DOESN'T! It does not teach the lifestyle change.
I know this is so tempting for people desperate to lose weight & that is why these crazy diets sell - but is it really worth your life & not seeing a beautiful scene like the pic above ever again.
Losing weight & changing your lifestyle is HARD WORK - yes it is - but doing it in a healthy way & a way that will teach you how to stick with it long term is what makes sense! YOU CAN DO IT!
Share your thoughts. Have you heard of this before?
PS: Also wanted to share this link to faulty jogging strollers that are being recalled!

I've been approached by a couple of people to try it. It seems rampant here in Utah.
(No thanks!)

I missed it on the Today show but saw it mentioned somewhere else. Maybe Dr. Oz? Months ago I came across a blogger who was on the plan. Seemed crazy to me. That "magic pill" "quick fix" that so many are looking for.

Keep that diet away from me, too gimmicky for me to consider. Any diet that is not simply eat better & move as much as you can; I don't want it. Nope, I don't car how cheap the infomercial price is, don't care if I get paid to try it, just keep it.
Besides, I want to EARN my healthy, sexy, amazing fit-self that I am going to become. Getting there with potions and gimmicks (as if I could) would just lesson teh PRIDE I insist on enjoying.
Now why am I so fired up from this post? I gotta go climb a few flights of stairs and settle down -
Have a Nice Day!

Maybe, just maybe such a diet could benefit someone very obese to lose pounds fast in the beginning so he/she can start moving and possibly avoid surgery. Of course assuming that HGC shots are safer than surgery. After that initial phase it has to be work, discipline, work and then more discipline.

The old post on CalorieLab about HCG has more comments than almost any other except for some sugar and oil fast!
I'm not sure what the calorie consumption is with people who have just had weight loss surgery, but it's probably close to 500 a day in the beginning. With maximizing nutritional efficiency and vitamin supplements this is probably sustainable with supervision.
Just wanted to give a medical point of view, not make a comment on stupid is as stupid does

DR. J, always appreciate your comments & knowledge. I am more scared that people will do this WITHOUT medical supervision.

I have not heard of it in its entirety, but this is so ridiculous! The scams that are out there preying on innocent victims makes me sick.
I can barely keep my 1500-1800 a day let alone 500! EEK!!!
I want to eat and feel like I am treating my body the best that I can and that diet is not going to do that for you. Plus, 500 calories a day you can't afford to exercise and build your body it would be too dangerous.
Thanks for sharing Jody!

I have heard of this before. It's just a gimmick and a 'diet.' It's not something you can do for life and it is very dangerous! Of course people lose weight on it, and fast, because their body is cannibalizing itself!
500 calories is pretty much my post workout breakfast LOL!

500 calories? My first thought was, "That's insane." Then I think about how desperate people are to find something that works. And when they can't stick to this they'll feel that they are failures and can never lose the weight. I feel bad for the people who will try this. It's sad really.
