Why's of Weight Loss/Gain or No Movement

Tuesday January 25, 2011

"I just don't understand why I am not losing any weight."

I hear this statement a lot & have heard it more times than I can count over the years, especially when I was a trainer. I have even said it in my past!

So, my questions is: Really? Do you really not know why you are not losing weight OR is it that you don't want to face the reality of why you are not losing weight?

Now, saying that, if your clothes are getting loser & the scale is stagnant, celebrate the loose clothes because the scale will catch up with the looser clothes & will move eventually. When I started lifting, there was a time when the scale & the clothes were not matching up BUT I really cared more about the looser clothes & my clothes size going down than anything else. Still do!

But back to the question above & especially if the clothes are not looser & the scale is not moving either OR the scale is going up too much. We have all read here & many other places & seen on TV & heard from the experts that food is at least 75% of the weight loss equation so:

"Every mouthful contributes to the betterment of your fitness, health & physique."

I can't even remember where I read that. I have to start writing that down!

**Also, I will be talking about crazy diets tomorrow (possibly life threatening one) and Thursday, in memory of Jack LaLanne who we lost Sunday - the pioneer of fitness! Some of his words of wisdom.

man, why do I gotta be up at the crack of dawn before 7:30AM (oh yeah... to drink some coffee before the gym)

I'm excited for this post. Maybe it will inspire me how to answer those when I hear that question 100x a week. (Not that I'm a trainer but I might as well be from the questions I get)

Can't wait to read your guest post!

That is the question we all get after losing our weight, but they usually don't want to hear what we have to say unfortunately. Its big change, and most want a quick fix.

By far the right answer is "don't want to face the reality"... at least whenever I have faced this question it has always been just that. There is always a reason I can put my finger on and that finger points back to me & my behaviors.

Yes, Patrick - the ole reality check that I wrote about not too long ago.... it starts with the person themselves!

Yup - I get this a lot lately. People I haven't seen in about 6 months have asked me what I've been doing to make such a visible change in my health. They're usually quite dissapointed to learn that I've cut out snacking and am working out a lot...
Hardest thing is to watch someone I care about deal with this. My sis-in-law battles this constantly and is convinced that there's something wrong with her physically that is preventing her from losing weight. Every few months it is somethign new. I've mentioned the constant snacking, poor nutrition and juice intake and no activity as a reason...but she doesn't want to hear it. When you're almost 400 pounds it's hard to start and do anything, especially when you're married to a man with the metabolism of a road runner.
I try and encourage her in any way I can...it just desn't change the fact that hard work is hard. Sometimes I feel bad for saying it, but it is what it is...I just know I refuse to lie to myself anymore. I hope I can live by example.

I think most people would agree that if they really examine what they are doing, they will see why they aren't losing. Off to check out the other post now...

Great post. It's amazing the importance we've placed on the scales and not on how we're feeling or what's happening with our clothes. Cheers,Rick

It true we whine when we are not losing but refuse to look at our own habits. I used to be so guilty of this. I would workout hard eat right(my way). Get real! It take more than just the actions it also takes changes how we think about things. It takes balance between exercise/diet and mentality (what drives and motivates us. Sorry I ranting. I just have strong feelings about this. Thanks for letting me rant a little.

this just boils down to people not being honest with themselves. they whine to their trainers or friends that they have NOOOOO idea why they are gaining, or why they are not losing weight. they KNOW why, they just don't want to admit their own pitfalls.
