Healthy Hero Bars

TGIF Friday January 21, 2011

Just a reminder to enter my GIVEAWAY!

I saw this recipe on my Oxygen Women's Fitness newsletter & had to share cause it sounded yummy to me & a nice snack or "to take with you mini meal". I have not tried it but looks easy to modify if you want to do that with flavors and/or ingredients. The pic above is NOT these bars. There was no pic but I thought these looked good & maybe YOU want to add a little shredded coconut or even some nuts or dried fruit. Remember whatever you do  to change this up, the stats at the end will change.

Heather’s Hero Bars - Ready in 40 minutes • Makes 12 servings

  • 3 1/2 cups rolled oats
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered nonfat milk
  • 4 scoops chocolate protein powder
  • 1 cup sugar-free syrup (try DaVinci brand)
  • 2 egg whites
  • 1/4 cup orange juice
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1/4 cup organic apple sauce

1. Preheat oven to 325ºF.
2.  Mix first 3 ingredients in a bowl.
3.  Add remaining ingredients and mix well (it should have the texture of cookie dough).
4.  Spread on a cookie sheet, or a 9x12-inch baking dish for thicker bars, and bake until edges are browned, about 25 minutes.
5.  Cut into 10 portions.

After my blechy experience buying a premade protein bar this morning I think I'll definitely try ane make these. They look yummy and WAY better than the chocolate filled junk I tried.

Seeing as I'm allergic to OJ, do you figure they'd taste OK with apple juice instead?

Those bars look good! I would probably sub mashed banana for the sugar free syrup since I don't do SF. Or maybe pureed dates!

I also want to try subbing the protein powder with peanut flour (since it is my new obsession!).

Thx Lori! I was going to specifically ask about the SF syrup & what to replace it with & love the suggestion of the PB flour since I have that in the house too! You are great!!! I will wait for your test on the PB flour though!

These look tasty. I'm headed out of town later this week, and these might be a nice little take-a-long snack in case the hotel doesn't have anything decent for breakfast. Thanks, Jody.

When I hungry I go directly for the chips or anything that is easy to grab. This usually means unhealthy. I am definitely going to try this. Thanks for sharing.
