Giveaway - The Real Food Diet Cookbook

Thursday January 20, 2011

The Real Food Diet CookbookI was contacted to read & review this cookbook - The Real Food Diet Cookbook by Dr. Josh Axe. Now saying that, this book is not about "a diet". It is about eating whole, real foods and cooking whole & real foods - not all that packaged stuff. You can view a few of the recipes HERE & if you are not a winner, purchase it as well. YUM!!! This is not one of those fad diets out there you are seeing every day since the new year nor is it a quick fix. It is about eating real food vs. the packaged stuff.

Dr. Axe starts out his book in Section One with Real Food vs. Fake Food like an apple that has all the fiber & nutrients rather than a glass of processed apple juice.

He also is into not counting the calories or fat or carbs or measuring everything & rather wants people to just eat whole, real quality (not quantity) food. He pushes that quality over quantity! Now, you know I am one that likes to know the nutritional breakdown of all my foods or most of them as well the calories... so this was a challenge for me!

The book also stress the nutrient density (ND) of food - "the amount of nutrients in food, both real & fake. It is a scale that ranges from 0 to 1000 with 1000 being the best."

Dr. Axe also follows & eats based on the Glycemic Load-GL ("measures the carbohydrate content & the GI of food to give an idea of blood-sugar-raising potential of carbs") & Glycemic Index-GI ("how quickly carbohydrates are digested") of foods. He feels that to lose weight, one must watch the GL closely & make it a primary focus.

He outlines his top 5 best foods, talks spices & herbs, talks gluten free & many of the recipes involve gluten free products, his worst 5 fake foods, talks all kinds of oils & the best uses for them, dairy, sweeteners & much more. He really does cover a lot of extremely useful information. I loved the oil part since I am not "in the know" about which oils to use when & with low or high heat.

The recipes, 130 of them, are not too hard even for me. I am a simple person & I think I could make a lot of these dishes. It is about fresh whole foods, he prefers organic meat, healthy fats, spices & herbs. I think a lot of you that are cooks will already have many of the ingredients in your pantry. A simple person like me would have to buy some staples! BUT, the recipes look amazing & delish.

In general, I liked the book for the information in it AND I LOVE A PICTURE BOOK - once again, a simple person. BUT I LOVE TO SEE PICS OF THE FOOD I WILL BE PREPARING. IT HELPS A NOT SO GOOD COOK LIKE ME & makes the book more readable to me. In fact, this book was very easy to read thru! I also like that it would be easy for me to substitute an ingredient hear or there if I wanted to change it up.

My one biggest gripe - No nutritional stats. I do go by that because it works for me & the older I get, the more important it is... I like to know calories, protein, fat, carbs, sodium etc as well as how many servings per recipe. I think in general you can easily plug this in to an online calculator but I rather have it there for me. For those that eat intuitively or like Dr. Axe, then it would be no prob for you.

GIVEAWAY: I have one book to pass on to a reader for the low price of a comment.

Giveaway is open to U.S. residents only & will run thru Wednesday, January 26th. Winner announced on Thursday the 27th.

I always have difficulty finding "health" cookbooks that I like because most of them do not fit into my nutritional needs. This book looks very promising and I may have to check it out even without the giveaway!

No stats huh, seems lie a big miss for a diet cookbook. I understand the mindset of not counting calories and all of that, but if i am going to go to a diet cookbook the stats really help validate what I'm eating is right.

Hi Jody. I've been a scratch cook all my life, so I don't need the cookbook. Just wanted to say Hi. Like you, I read all nutritional labels and I need to pay special attention to portions right now while I'm trying to lose weight.

Just as information and in no way does this reflect on the value of Josh Axe or his book. He calls himself a wellness physician. That means, well, I can't find a meaning for it. He is not a physician but a chiropractor. This does not mean that his information is bad, just that it bothers me that he isn't as forthright as I would like.
