Getting Real with Weight Loss

Thursday January 6, 2011

So Tuesday I wrote about honesty and weight loss. Yesterday I wrote about consistency, choices and change. Today is about both of those and the reality check of putting your weight loss/get healthy plan into motion.

In the comments Tuesday, Lori  wrote this: "It is being honest. And for me, being honest means how willing I really am to go big on certain things. I have to be honest at realistically what I am willing to give up or have to do to reach my goals and whether that is sustainable for me long-term."

Yes, that is the big question. I have written & chatted for years that people need to make lifestyle changes & ones that they can live with now & long term. Now, saying that, I have changed things along the way but CHANGE is part of keeping things moving & continuing with long term results ..... meaning continued weight loss if necessary & maintenance after that.

Life, jobs, our bodies and our age change along the way so there is a continuing need to "listen" to the bod and also to do reality checks when things stall. Also, as I have written, hormones change in women & men have their changes too with age so it is not like you lose the weight & never have to think about this again, young or older!

I knew when I lost my weight back when that I was eating wrong & too much. I knew that I would have to work at it in some way my whole life. I do consider myself a work in progress always.

SO, BACK TO LORI'S COMMENT. If you want to look lean & mean, you are going to have to work much harder at it than if you just want to lose some weight or tone up.

Lori writes about evaluating whether she is willing to give up certain things.

I will say this: To stay the way I look, I work very very very hard at it. I always have & the older I get, the harder I work at it. And YES, I have the willingness to give up certain things to look this way. That link is to a post by MizFit. Willpower vs. Willingness. Many view the word willpower as "evil or a deterrent". I don't. To me, it says I am strong BUT I do get how it can be a turn off to others & I also interchange it with my willingness to work hard too. I wrote a post way back when on how just changing the words you say can change your view of the challenges ahead & I think MizFit said it well!

Now, you all read that I still enjoy my weekend cookie treats & fit in my healthy bread BUT in general, I have made the choice to eat & work out in a certain way to be the look I am. I have the willingness to do that to look this way... for now. I am 53 so who knows what the future may bring & that is what change is all about.

YOU - LIKE LORI - YOU HAVE TO BE REALISTIC WITH YOURSELF ABOUT YOUR GOALS FOR WEIGHT LOSS & BODY LOOK & IF YOU ARE WILLING TO DO WHAT IT TAKES TO GET THERE. HOW BAD DO YOU WANT IT? HONESTY & REALITY CHECK! If you want to look super lean & muscular, it will take a lot more work than just losing some pounds. Ya got to understand that up front.

Your thoughts?

Geez, I just finished drafting tomorrow's post for my blog and it has a close parallel to this one. Did we both drink from the same kool-aid jug today? Nah, no way you can drink kool-aid and look as amazing as you do!

Keep it REALISTIC - message received.

I absolutely love your last couple of posts, very well said! Lori, spot on!!

I had no idea how hard I would have to work to get the lean body I want. I thought all I would have to do is lose weight...NOT! Boy, I've been working for almost 2 years since losing 60 pounds to get where I want and still have the loose skin.

I soak up every word you ladies write on your blogs and I'm so thankful for each of you!

April, it can be as simple as that too. The one thing about weights, we can use them to our advantage to look different. I have a not so small waist but people think it is due to my wider back...

I've had to work pretty hard to be as fit as I am. Since I made doing it a daily habit, it has gotten much easier, never easy though, but the wellness rewards have been worth it!

It's so true. There are a few ladies I work with who keep incessantly bothering meabout how I've lost weight and toned up and they hate hearing that I had to work for it. They want a simple answer they can do too. They figure I'm starving myself or on some crazy diet. It drives me bonkers.

It took me 30 odd years to figure out what I need to do and am willing to do to look like Ido now, but now that I know, I can figure out what I'm willing to do and not do and then just do it consistantly. And be happy with the results.

Geosomin, you amaze me with your dedication & work too! Inspirational! You are right on.. I have had people think I was barfing or working out 8 hours like The Biggest Loser contestants.

As for learning, every day for me & I learned a lot in my older years!

My big reality check was giving up the idea of being "lean and mean". When I reached my current weight range, friends began to mention that I was looking "haggard" and "tired". Not the look I was going for. It's what I saw in the mirror, too, so I accepted that this much slimmer and healthier, but still somewhat soft physique was where I wanted to live. And THIS is what I'll continue to work for. Gratefully.

Cammy, thank you for writing this! I think people do have to accept what they are willing to do to look a certain way & if that is not in the cards.. you still look great & your accomplishments, amazing!

I loved that post of Carla's. And this one I think we all have to ask ourselves what we really want that we are willing to work for, not what we really want but are not willing to work for. And what we are willing to give up. Not just food, but balancing things in life as we choose our priorities.

YES, Karen.. that is the thought I was trying to get across... what are you willing to work for.. does not mean that you are still not great is you are not lean & mean & actually many prefer not to be that! AND YES, you do have to give up some things to be lean & mean... AND YES, all about YOUR priorities & the balance you want!

Excellent point. At one point, I wanted to be crazy ripped. I wanted the look of a men's fitness magazine cover model. As I've come to realize what work it takes to accomplish that, I'm finding I may need to reevaluate. I'm not sure that I still won't want that. I guess I'll decide when I'm closer. For now, I just want to be healthier than I currently am.
