Dare to Dream!

It is not how you deal with success that is the measure of a woman. It is how you deal with the setbacks - Katie Couric

I read this quote while out & about & recorded it in my cell phone notepad. Of course you can substitute man for woman or substitute person to encompass us all.

I definitely have seen people that pick themselves up & move on after "failure" or tragedy or illness. I have seen others that don't.

I think I fall in a mesh of "sometimes" here. It depended on where I was in my life & how I was feeling at the time BUT I do admit that this is a huge struggle for me. The setbacks & how they hit me emotionally & mentally. At least I have figured out how to not emotionally eat 99% of the time. For many, this is not so.

With weight loss & exercise goals, this is huge. How many of you blog about your struggle with the ups & downs of weight loss. You write about the emotional struggles that hold you back or set you back.

I go back to The Biggest Loser. Ada, one of the contestants, comes from a very traditional Asian family. She gained her weight after her brother died while she was the only one there. She was very young so it really was not her fault but her parents seemed to blame her & she never felt good enough & gained weight. On the show, they work to break thru her struggles with this. To not let the setbacks hold her back.

Another past contestant was part of the first ever triathlon for past Biggest Loser contestants. She really wanted to win the women's portion. During the ride portion, she did not count her laps correctly & ended up doing too many & thus ruining her chances of winning. What was her comeback:

Paraphrasing here - What I learned on the show about this & life is it is not what happens & what may not work out BUT how you deal with the situation that will define you.

So I am asking you, have you managed to deal with the setbacks & move on or is that still a struggle? Do any of you have some great motivational stories to help others?

I love the saying above & maybe we all should carry this with us:

Every great dream begins with a dreamer.
Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience and the passion to reach for the stars and to change the world.

Harriet Tubman

Take away - believe in yourself! I know it is hard. I struggle too but keep trying!

I just lost my entire comment, gotta love computers.

I do have setbacks, but the differences now than before I don't let them keep me down in the rut. It may take 2 days to get out of them or more, but I get out. Before I would fall and give up, and you can't give up. There's too much to lose and that is called LIFE!

I feel my story has an impact on people that is what they tell me anyways, that is why I started writing (blogging).

It was mentioned on someone elses webpage, so I am glad its getting out there. http://wp.me/pPEbl-gM

I am not past this yet, as you well know. I guess I should count my blessings that I am maintaining, even with my natural propensity to eat during stressful times.

What it has boiled down to for me...is how I look at it...once I look at the situation and find even the smallest crumb of an opportunity...THAT is exactly what it becomes....

That is a great quote. And your post also reminds me of another which I wish I could accurately remember but the basic point is we can't control what happens to us we can only control our response to whatever it is.

My thing is to KEEP TRYING. If something isn't working for you, it's because it's not right for you at this point in time. We all have to constantly keep working at it to find the right things that work for each of us.

    I really like that quote.

I catch a lot of flak for my "positivity" (like it's a bad thing, for some reason), but I honestly don't see things in terms of 'setbacks'. Or maybe it's that I don't see setbacks as a bad thing. Victory is in continuing to *try*.

    Jody,
It's so easy to read this and say "yep, that's what I'm going to do the next time there's a setback". And then, when it happens...that's what really determines how we move forward. I suppose, in part, it depends too on what it is that has felt like a failure - and if that's something I want to continue striving toward.

On the other hand, even when it might be something we're ready to move on from - there's still the way we deal with it all.

Love the quote, and how it makes me think about how I am in these moments...

The best strategy I know for set-backs is to first understand that they are going to happen. Novice or Pro, set backs happen. If you don't understand that, then when they happen they are bound to depress you. But if you get it, then you need to also get that all you need to do is learn from it and move on. Sounds simple, and it isn't always that simple mentally; strength in mind is a key trait to over coming set backs.
