Food to Go/Travel

Thursday December 9, 2010

So, I have been on the road a bit the past few days. I had UCLA & the teeth crap last week & along with some other things. Next week may involve some other road trips. I know many of you have this going on every single day.

Being out & about & on the road, I like to bring some of my own food rather than rely on what I might find wherever. Yes, I do know that there are healthy alternatives in the cafeteria at UCLA but I still like to bring my own stuff. I always have a portioned out snack of my almonds in the car for the ride home just in case!!! BUT, I also come prepared with breakfast food before the appointment since I get there early & have to wait. I bring my homemade protein bars and/or cookies for the ride home (again, just in case cause they are easy to eat while I drive) & I bring a PureFit bar for breakfast before the appt. I also eat something before I leave the house since I work out before I go. In CA, you have to hit the road very early OR you sit in traffic forever. It is bad enough leaving early. So, I would rather sit & wait there than sit in a car on a freeway. I bring stuff to clean my teeth after eating!

There are lots of cool portable coolers these days too. You can carry food with you. I know many of you do that already but think about portioning out some PB into a small container & you can spread that on fruit or anything else you heart desires. If you like string cheese, bring a little pack of that. You can separate your sandwich foods & put a sandwich together when you are ready so the bread is not soggy OR just eat the makings of a sandwich & bring some portioned nuts or other healthy snacks as well. Whatever works for you is what counts. I like to eat bread separate from whatever is inside the sandwich but that is just me & it takes me longer to eat it so mentally that is a good thing!

There are lots of ways to get around this if you just do a little bit of planning. It can be a pain at times but your body and your health will thank you! YES!

Tell us what you do with your meals to make your traveling days easier. OR, if you take food to work, how does that go?

All I am saying is that if you plan & make your own food a majority of the time, you do have a better chance of meeting your weight loss & maintenance goals. Study after study proves this. Those that eat out more, weigh more & have more trouble losing weight and/or keeping it off long term
.

One of the many things I have learned this past year is that I get hungry, come rain or shine, between 3-4 pm every, single day. In the "old days" I would just struggle through this hungry period and would typically end up with a terrible headache and/or would come home and eat everything in sight. Jimmy knew I needed a little help in the eating department, because I have a difficult time planning ahead (meaning I never take the time to make lunches or grocery shop), and he has seen to it, over the past year, that each day I have a sandwich for my lunch and a Luna Bar (I love the Lemon Luna Bar) for my 3-4 pm snack. Since I started eating lunch at a regular time, because it is there and prepared for me, and eat my Luna Bar in the afternoon, I feel so much better . The snack bar saved me!

Karma, you are lucky to have Jimmy & vice versa! It makes such a difference when we eat regularly thru the day. I used to not either way back when & then, yes, we want to eat everything in sight when we get home...

I usually take 2 dishes of protein powder and a salad for lunch. Simple and easy. I have a bag of no salt pistachios for munching too

April, yes, great advice & simple! I forgot to mention & you did, taking protein powder with you is easy & just mix with water or low/non fat soy or almond or regular milk & voila, a mini meal!

Because I tend to eat warrior style 20/4 I usually do not have to bring food along for a day trip, however when I'm traveling or not on that schedule, as you do, Jody, I bring some snack, usually fruit, with me. UCLA has a beautiful campus and I'm sure there are some lovely spots to have a mini picnic.

I bring water and fruit to work daily. I figure if I have it on hand then that vending machine will stay far from mind. The further the better,

Patrick, great point! Those vending machines are not a good thing when one is hungry!

I keep washed pre-cut veggies and fruit in the fridge so when I am ready to leave the house, I just grab a handfull and put it in a container, add some nuts and I am ready to go.

I take food a lot Right now I have a smooshed protein bar in the bottom of my purse for "emergencies" and an old bag of airplane peanuts. I sometimes bring a little lunch bag with sliced peppers or cheese if I know I will be out at a time I'm hungry. And you should see what I bring when I fly! You never know how long a delay could be

Karen, that flying comment cracked me up! When I fly, my carry on is mostly food. Drives my hubby crazy!

I'm the same way with sandwiches- when they are stuffed they are too quick to eat! And I pack my food everywhere- gotta be prepared!

In the winter months, I always have a snack stash in the car, but summer months in Memphis don't allow for much, even with a cooler. But if I'm out and about and need a snack, I can always hit up MCd's for sliced apples or Chick-fil-A for a fruit cup. So my snacking needs are met year round.

Planning makes such a huge difference in what I eat. I hate when I get too busy to plan. I guess I need to plan to plan.
