Medicine, Pills & Your Health!
I know that many of you do not watch The Biggest Loser but many do. Personally, I still watch it BUT I so hate the product placement & some other things.... BUT I do know that product placement pays for the show & I see this in other shows more & more.
What I do like is the segments on paying it forward. Bringing the knowledge home & passing it on to family, friends & for some, making it their job & life passion. Yes, some put the weight back on BUT others keep it off & pay it forward!
If you watch this show or even other stories on people that are obese, you know that many or most of them are on some sort of medication, pill or both to manage what the weight has done to their body & health.
In the most recent season, they discussed Fredo & all the pills, meds & shots he was on to manage his obesity (prior to losing the weight). He was taking 6 shots & 12 medications to control diabetes & other health related issues due to his obesity! That is a lot of dang meds!!!!!! In the last episode, he was finally off ALL meds & shots directly related to losing weight & his healthier eating/exercise habits.
OK, so for those of you out there still struggling to lose weight or even start a weight loss program, take a good read at the stats above again. They are played out over & over on this show among many of the contestants AND over & over in real life. Even children are being put on meds due to child obesity problems. Do you want your kids on meds so early in life?? They learn from what happens in the house as well as outside the house. AND, good habits can start early IN the house!
Are you on medications? Has your doctor told you that he will have to put you on meds if you do not lose weight? Are you struggling to breathe just doing regular ole everyday activities?
OK, if you are on meds, add up how much money you are spending on medications, shots & doctor appointments? Maybe the dollars will be the thing that sinks in & how much you can save by getting healthy! It is just like adding up how much you can save by stopping smoking. Not only will you be healthier BUT those dollars can go to savings, bills or whatever. Times are tough right now!
AND.. check out the "cartoon" above.. yes, sometimes meds are a necessity BUT if you are creating the problems yourself, think about all the friggin side effects of many medications... all those commercials on TV that end with about 10 side effects that make you want to have the problem rather than the side effect!!!
Just get to thinking about this. Losing weight & "moving more" can add so much to your life in terms of health, longevity of life and more. BUT it also can take away... YES, take away all or most of those medications that you take to manage the health related probs associated with obesity.
JUST DO IT FOR YOU!
Anyone want to share how getting healthy & losing weight was a direct factor in getting them off medications?

One of my fave NSV's was getting the docs OK to quit the blood pressure meds this past summer. I forget how many years I was on them, 4-5 I believe. Never again!

Patrick, that is a wonderful NSV!

I have been in the exercise/fitness game for nearly 30 years. I have worked with many people living with a variety of ailments. Among the more common ailments I see is hyper-tension -- high blood pressure. It's one of the few medications where a reasonable workout schedule, practiced consistently, can have a fairly immediate impact on reducing the need for medication.
Clients I have worked with who engage in strength training 2-3 days per week, and a (reasonably)rigorous cardio activity 4-6 days per week, often have their blood pressure medications reduced within just a few months. Some through the years, have been able to eliminate the need for medications altogether.
Not-so-coincidentally, I have also known some clients to have had their medications for depression reduced and in a few instances eliminated.
It might appear, that movement is a supreme elixir.

Roy, can I say more.. nope. Thx for sharing your experiences with your clients! I hope people read & realize how important taking care of yourself is...

I for one can say losing weight will help any diabetic; however, I am type 1 and there is no more shots.
The guy you are speaking of most likely had Type 2 diabetes. You can stop insulin shots when you have that type because its not an auto immune disease like Type 1.
I went from having 40 units of insulin a day down to 5 - 11 units a day after my weight loss. My blood work has been perfect including my A1C.
Yes, controlling your weight WILL have a benefit toward any diabetics.

My first sentence didn't make a lot of sense after posting it. What I mean to say for a Type 1 you cannot stop your insulin shots no matter how much you lose.

Sheri, I should have clarified that. Thx for doing so!

I used to get heartburn horribly every day. I was popping Tums like candy and had to start buying Pepcid AC to take every day (expensive!!).
I cannot remember the last time I needed to take Pepcid. At has to be at least 4 years. I need an occasional antacid now and then if I eat tomato sauce or have a rich meal, but we have had the same bottle for about a year now!

Lori, that is pretty interesting.. maybe others will read & recognize that if they are doing this, their weight may be a factor.

For many people popping a pill will be the preferred choice over diet and exercise - it is so much easier. Sad but true.

Ewa, you are right on this.. my bro was one of these that said that & I read him the riot act!!! I can only hope that others start to see how much better it is NOT to take the pills.. we can try to educate...

I have been fortunate to not need medications, hopefully because of the lifestyle I lead, but yes, I know of people who have stopped their meds because of healthy lifestyle changes. Unfortunately, I know many many more who have gone in the opposite direction.

Dr. J, I am sure you have seen it all....

I've only ever been on one medication, for hypertension. Still not off of it completely (stoopid stress and heredity!), but the dosage had to be reduced to the minimum level after I lost my first 20 pounds.

I have no weight related med story. But I can share that I have been on Zocor for years for familial high cholesterol. When I first went on it I was "thin" and that was the reaction I got when friends found out - "How can you have high cholesterol - you're thin?" That diagnosis was what started me exercising. So in some ways it was a good thing. (BTW - exercise raises my good cholesterol to a great number but I still need the meds for the bad cholesterol.)

Karen, I have had higher cholesterol all my life too even with all my healthy eating & exercise BUT my good stuff is always super high so they say I am ok.....

I am happy to say I don't have to take any medications! I will do what I can to keep it that way too.
