Doing for Yourself, Doing for Others

"What you do for yourself – any gesture of kindness, any gesture of gentleness, any gesture of honesty and clear seeing toward yourself – will affect how you experience your world. In fact, it will transform how you experience the world. What you do for yourself you're doing for others, and what you do for others, you're doing for yourself." ~ Pema Chödrön

This is from The Jungle of Life. Lance has great posts over there so check him out if you have not already. I love the quote he used here and the pic of course!

From Jody: This is traditionally "the time of giving". Yes, people give all year round but I think more so during this holiday season. So, while you are giving to others, are you also giving to yourself. Being good to yourself & making time for you & your health IS NOT SELFISH! Personally, I think it makes us a better person & when we are a better person, we are better for all those around us.

In fact, after I wrote this, Lance posted this for his Sunday Thought for the Day:

"You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection." ~ Buddha

So what are you experiencing? What are you doing for yourself... which means doing for others too. Are you transforming your life & how you see the world & those around you?

Are you transforming you to a healthier you which in fact will have an impact on all those around you, especially family! Why not start now. There is no time like NOW. Don't wait till January 1st.

Pay it forward! And while you are at it, pay it forward to yourself too. You deserve it!

Thx Lance for your always wonderful posts!

I agree 100% on your thoughts. I have been striving for over 2 years now to lose and keep my weight off not only for myself, but for my family and career.

I have diabetes and its destroyed so many things in my body, but right now every thing has slowed down because of eating right and focusing 100% on me daily.

It in turn has helped my family not worry so much about me and my work place have more confidence I'll be there every day.

    Thanks for sharing this, Jody.

I'm realizing this more and more each day - how important it is to not forget self. And that's just it...when we give some love and care to ourselves, we just naturally are more loving and caring outward, as well...

    Pretty cool how that works!

I'm very fortunate to have a profession where I can help others! I've noticed over the years that even at my most difficult times, if I reach out and help others it is a gift I give myself.

That phrase right there would make a great blog title or bumper sticker or anything in between. Right now sharing the gift of fitness and better ways with family is where much of my focus is. Getting the family thinking healthier a tad more each day, week, is the idea.

Great post. When I was in the audience for the Dr. Oz show with Richard Simmons, Richard said something that just stuck with me. He said, "You never know who you will influence on any given day." And it is so true.

Beautiful post Jody! Putting me first is a difficult one for me but I am working on it. As a stay at home mom for the past 25 years it has become very easy for me to put everyone else's needs ahead of mine. I give to my church, my family and my friends. I find it much easier to give than to receive.
