Thanksgiving Strategies & Funnies!

Being Jewish, this cracked me up!!!!!

So, tomorrow is one of the "days of food". You can make it thru this without too much UGH feeling if you try. Here is what I offer up:

1. Plan ahead so you know what you do & do not want to commit to food wise. If you are going all out & eating whatever you want, than own it & don't bit*h afterwards.

2. Try to exercise before "the event". If you can't, at least suggest a walk after the food event OR do something both before & after.. split it up, even if it is just out walking & enjoying your time with family/friends.

3. Eat a healthy breakfast otherwise you risk the chance of being friggin starving which leads to... we all know this... eating everything in site before we even give our stomach a chance to feel fullness.

4. Drink you water. Don't dehydrate! If you are drinking alcohol, try to keep it to a minimum as lots of empty calories there & drink your water to combat that.

5. Bring at least one healthy dish that you can go to.. help to even out some of the other foods there.

6. TRY to portion control. If you have to have a bit of everything, make it a bit & not a wheel barrel full. See this clip from The Today Show. I have written many posts about these nibbles here & there & how they add up. This clip shows you how nibbling thru making the turkey day meal can add up to over 760 calories! AND, we know for some, that could be more!

7. SLOW DOWN! Eat slower, savor the flavors & food. Enjoy the family & friends. This will help you eat less.

8. Get back to basics the next day!!!!!!

Want to chime in on some tips for surviving the holidays... pass it on!

Me... you guessed it & I have written about it.... I exercise that day. I eat healthy at all my meals & I plan for & save up for my treat!

I believe that getting healthy & staying there is definitely hard work. But it doesn't need to be made to be more difficult than it already is. On holidays, I think we tend to make it more difficult. WHat we do the day before a holiday is what we need to do on a holiday; it shouldn't be any harder than that. The food on a holiday is different, no doubt. But on a holiday you can/should still follow your good senses where portion and nutrient balance are concerned. As for exercise, do it or don't based on the schedule with the family you have that day. Treat this day as you do any other day and you may just survuve it.

Great tips...so easy to go over board with all of the yummu selections. My tips would be to not go to the event hungry...have a mini meal and skip all appies before dinner..happy holidays to you!

Sian, great advice. Many people are stuffed after the appetizers yet feel compelled to keep eating & end up feeling UGH afterwards.

I'll be heading out of town early tomorrow so I've been working out every morning so I can take tomorrow off. I will be right back to it Friday though.

How about a family game of football in the back yard or a long walk after dinner?

What an awesome post Jody! Lots of great, sound advice as usual.

I am cooking a healthy meal for us which includes a reduced fat pumpkin pie. I will eat in moderation, exercise and enjoy the day guilt free.

One thing I would like to share is that "I have never regretted something I didn't eat!" I like to wake up the next day after a holiday or party with no regrets about my choices!

I want to thank you Jody for your blog and all the wonderful information and motivation that you share here.

You are a role model for good health, exercise and living a healthy lifestyle.

Wishing you and your family a blessed holiday!

I'm the same way as you- eat healthy, and then enjoy what I want! I'm not a big potato or stuffing fan so I'll pass on that, but count me in on dessert!

Happy Thanksgiving Jody! Thank you for sharing your blog with all of us.

I am just trying to remind myself that I can eat any food at any time and don't need to eat it all at one meal

Something I like to share this time of year: If the average American, eats the average Thnaksgiving dinner, and has a second helping of everything; they could take in as much as 5,000 calories. To walk that off, one would need to walk from Mobile, Alabama to Pensacola, Florida. In west-coast terms, that would be from just south of LA to the Mexican border.

Knowing that, I always take issue with those folk who indulge all day and then jaunt around the neighborhood to "walk it off"

    Happy Thanksgiving Jody!!!

Happy Thanksgiving to you and the family, Jody!!

When asked by people at the fitness center about being fit, I tell them what you do anyway from the club is more important than what you do at the club. Same with holidays.
