Seeing is Feeling

Fine light.

"The question is not what you look at, but what you see." ~ Henry David Thoreau

From Lance at The Jungle of Life.

I really stopped to think when I read this from Lance. It makes more sense than we give it credit for at first glance. How many of us go thru life just sort of going... not noticing the beauty around us or smelling the roses as they say. A door can be a pathway to wonder!!!

Did anyone watch Oprah yesterday with Barbra Streisand & Robert Redford? I usually record things like this & watch them after the fact. Not today. I made sure I watched this when it was on.... WHY?

When you "look" at Barbra Streisand, what so you "see"? Do you see a singer, an actress, a star?

This is what I see and feel: I see an amazing lady that was brought into my life by my parents. Each time I see her I remember my parents taking me & my sisters to Funny Girl in Morristown, NJ outside of Mendham where we lived at that time. I remember them telling me about her first time on The Ed Sullivan Show. I remember them showing us that show in black & white & how she sounded when she opened up her mouth and "sang". I remember at one of my jobs I had the opportunity to get tickets to see her & I bought 3 & took my parents to her concert for their wedding anniversary.

So when others look at Barbra & see a singer, I look & "see" some wonderful times with my parents & what they brought into my life. Every time I see or hear her, this is what I think about beyond Barbra as a singer, writer, actress, activist, producer, director and so much more. And yes, miss my parents always! That is why some things make us "see" beyond the surface.

It might be a good exercise to try to see versus look.... with exercising, eating better & working at those goals, don't look at it as such a "pain in the arse". See how it will make you healthier for life, will allow you to enjoy so much more with your family & friends, do so much more, will help you keep disease away. See it as you are lucky to have a body that can actually move vs. many who can't walk or can't do things due to health issues or other diseases. See the wonderful things it brings to you.

Are you looking or seeing? What do you see?

Postscript:
When I first did the post, it was minus the Barbra stuff but after the show, all I could think about was this post & what I "see" when I hear or see Barbra Streisand.

I have not watched yet but record her show every day and eventually watch most. I will think of you when I get to this episode What your post reminded me of is Rosie O'Donnell. Have you ever heard her talk about Barbra? She also sees someone who had a huge life impact, not a singer.

    That is a great quote.

I am with you in how you are teaching us to SEE ourselves. To see what can be if we just make it so. I've had a couple of similar SEE posts recently, always great to read someone like you saying the same, and of course better than I, as a matter of validation that my mind is in the right place.

My Barbra would be John Wayne. My dad &I used to stay up late watching his movies in the 70's. Those were could times. When I see the Duke, I see my dad.

    Jody,
Thanks for sharing that quote here...it's one that makes me stop and think, too. What am I really seeing...beyond just the surface. Love what you shared about Barbara, and how much more there is to her (for you).

That was a beautiful post and such wonderful memories you shared. I did see the Oprah show. I watched it last night with hubby. I think she is amazing.

I love your perspective on really seeing not just looking. Bravo!

Love this! It flows nicely with "you see what you believe" (a favorite quote of mine), and I love discovering the differences and similarities in what people see and believe.

You really brought back memories for me Jody. My dad used to play Frank Sinatra albums after work while we were doing our homework. The first dance at my wedding was "All the Way" by Frank. When I hear his music or see one of his old movies it brings back all those memories.

I recorded this episode and watched today! Seeing and hearing Barbra sing Memories...wow...

Anyway, as for seeing, here's my favorite quote: what we see depends mainly on what we look for!

Yes, so amazing how when you look at some things, you see so much more. Same with certain scents and songs, too - they can really take you back and evoke emotions.
