Mental vs. Physical Fullness

Tuesday October 12, 2010

I think we all struggle with that mental versus physically full thing.. that damn mind of ours!

I have this happen more than you guys out there probably think... it is not that I am hungry but more that I just want something else.

I eat mini meals so I am eating regularly throughout the day... mostly all healthy. OK, all healthy as I really don't bring too much stuff in the house that could tempt me. BUT every so often, I just want more even though I am NOT physically hungry.. I am MENTALLY hungry.

Many times the above happens due to hormones... and don't all the women out there know about that! :-O

I get HUGE carb cravings before that "lovely time of month" & often during it! Now with perimenopause, HOLY CRAP, I have hormones that want sh*t all month long. I never know if I am coming or going!!!! Poor hubby!!!!

Here is where we have to really take control of our mind & ourselves. Again, I am not saying that we can never "cave" & have a little something.. just try to control it!!! OR if you get out of control, get right back to it that same day!

We all can find our own way to get thru this.. you just have to make plans for the inevitable & yes, I can bet this is inevitable for most of us.

So, think it thru & make a plan of action for "the next time". If we have a plan for some of these obstacles... well, we are prepared & being prepared is better than the alternative. We have the choice to make a better choice!

Truth be told, sometimes I just get on the computer & start some sort of crazy search process for something & before I know it, an hour or more is gone & it is time for another mini meal! Other times, I do some core or stretching work. I have other ways to get past it but these are just a couple. And yes, there are those times I don't win but a good thing I don't keep too much crap in the house.. or at least stuff I would want.. but as we all know, it does not matter if it is healthy or not, if we eat too much, it is weight gain.

What do you do to avoid that MENTAL craving when physically, you are not hungry? Share your plan of attack!

I do MYRIAD things but what they all have in common is NOT distracting me from what Im REALLY FEELING but help me focus upon it and EXAMINE my feelings more closely.

I make a "healthier" version of whatever i'm craving and that usually does the trick. Or I get online and read blogs

Mental, so much is mental. I still drive by Mc Donalds and have the urge to drive in/thru. I was hoping that would just disappear. It doesn't apparently. The will to avoid the urge increases thankfully.

When that mental craving comes I try to distract myself with some chore. That way, when I'm done, not only did I accomplish something, I avoided mindless eating. (I wish I could say I do that 100% of the time, but I try!)

So true Jody!!! I just had an attack on Sunday and it wasn't pretty!

Why do we do these things when we know better and love the way we are now?

Sometimes I think I just don't give a crap and eat because I "deserve" it. Well, what I deserve is the miserable after affects.

    Thanks for the great thoughts!

I don't know if there is a male menopause or not, but exercise and correct diet have helped me so far, so I imagine they will manage that also.

"This too shall pass" Usually, it will pass in 20 minutes or so, so doing something else to distract myself will do the trick. I remember seeing something on Dr. Oz about that..the craving passing in 20 minutes. This proved true to me the other night when I had a mental attack craving choc. cake.

Journalling through the mental cravings helps me tremendously.

Also, lots of water. Sometimes those "cravings" can be dehydration.

Julie... yes, Miz mentioned writing down the feelings too & I have posted about that..... it is good to try to figure it out.... right about water too! But in this instance, I know I am not hungry.. it is all mental.... which that journaling will help...

Thx as always for stopping by!

When I was younger I never questioned the feelings -- I was just on a continuous binge for years. I'm only surprised that my highest weight was around 220 and not 300 or 400 pounds. As I've said before, once I finished menopause, it was no longer a problem -- I rarely ever have cravings (ok, yes, I do love bagels and need to keep them out of the house -- they are so wonderfully chewy!). But I do have days when I find myself hanging on the open fridge door gazing in semi-despair at mostly fruit, veggies, and diet soda. I LOVE radishes and always try to keep a stemmed and washed bowl of them in my veggie bin so I can grab 4 or 5 of them when I really just want something to chew. When I want to be soothed, I reach for a cup of decaf or herbal tea. But mostly I shut the fridge door and walk away and try to find something physical or mental to do to distract me. Friday I bought a small chainsaw and attempted to cut down a 30-foot (skinny) tree in our yard. My husband caught me before I had it down and finished the job, but I wish he would have let me do it myself. I love doing stuff like that -- makes me feel like a warrior!

Those are great tips! I struggle with that sometimes too. Especially when something is really good,I always want more! Distracting works wonders though, as does some sort of exercise! And that's also why I like mini meals!
