My Introduction to boxing and its amazing benefits

I had been a workout fiend since age 18, but once I hit my 40’s it seemed that nothing would stop my steady weight gain.  In spite of 90 minute daily workouts, my weight just kept climbing. It was maddening … and exhausting.  I wondered if it was time to just accept that now, in my 40’s and firmly rooted in perimenopause, my chance at a slim sinewy physique was gone.

That’s when I discovered boxing.  I liked the way fighters’ bodies looked – many of them slim and sinewy- so I began researching how they trained.  As it turns out, boxing and kickboxing not only provide resistance training as you punch or kick against a heavy bag, they are premier interval cardio workouts.  All in one!

Me, a middle-aged lady, found a boxing class to try.  It was mostly guys, the age of my kids, except for two extremely fit executive types, who looked to be my age.  Still, after the initial unease at stepping way outside my comfort zone, I was hooked.  It didn’t take long for me to see that boxing and the drills taught in those classes could resculpt my body in ways I could not have anticipated.

Every part of my body was recruited and challenged. My calves became curvier, thighs trimmer, butt firmer, arms sinewy - yet slimmer than ever.  And my stomach, which had always been the bane of my existence, constantly taunting me with its stubborn pooch right below the belly button?  GONE.  Had I not experienced this, I would have never believed this was possible without some kind of surgical intervention, but here I was, pooch-less, for the first time in my life.  And this occurred well after the age when conventional wisdom dictates the dreaded “middle age belly fat” caused by hormonal changes is unavoidable.

I found, after more than 30 years of being a dedicated and consistent exerciser, that boxing was, hands down, the single most effective workout for getting fit – fast.  I am a believer – so much so that my husband and I opened our own boxing gym, L.A. Boxing Lake Forest (a franchise of L.A. Boxing), in December 2008.

L.A. Boxing Lake Forest
L.A. Boxing is the largest boxing, kickboxing and mixed martial arts gym in the world.  It offers group cardio boxing and cardio kickboxing classes.  Both types of classes have similar elements, except that the kickboxing classes include kicking along with punching. For those interested in becoming amateur or professional fighters, sparring, Jiu Jitsu and mixed martial arts classes are also provided.

All of Jody’s readers are welcome to come to our gym and try it out for a week for free! Just visit our website for more info and directions at www.laboxing.com/lakeforest.
