“I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”
Thomas Edison

So, I saw this great quote above & thought we all needed to read it! I know I did! How many of us have tried once & gave up or tried 5 times & gave up.

They say that a child needs to be introduced to a new food at least 10 times before they click into liking it & wanting it (assuming that they are saying no to trying it). We all can relate to the NO coming from kids, especially when we want to start them eating healthier yet we have fed them junk for too long or for the first few years of their lives instead of introducing a healthier lifestyle for them early on.

A personal example: I have been submitting entries to be a reader model in a couple of the magazines I read since my 30's! No, not every year but on & off since my mid to late 30's. I also have submitted entries to a couple "make over" shows at least 4 times. I lost count! Although it is very upsetting & gets me down, for some reason I keep trying. I guess I still think I have something to offer especially now with my age being a good example for young & older too.

Honestly, sometimes I feel I have failed BUT I think I need to start saying the quote above to myself to keep me on a more positive & better track if I decide to continue to try for this goal.

So for those of you that have lost & gained & lost & gained, tell me, will you never give up? Will you choose the "lifestyle change" path & stop the "diet" path? Will number 10,001 be the path to that better & healthier you? Will you find that program that is right for you long term? TRY! Don't give up because it may not be the right one.

I can't tell you how many times I have changed things up to keep my progress steady AND improving. Just because things stalled or the bod & hormones started attacking me, I did not throw in the towel. I continued the hard fight & will to the very end! YOU CAN DO IT!

What do you think of the quote above? Is that you OR do you need to start using that as your mantra? I think I might have to take that mantra challenge on! Please share any of your experiences or thoughts to continue the discussion.

I love those quotes!!! The first one -- I could apply that to my love life as well as weight loss and exercise habits. LOL

The second one is perfect. And, no, I'm not giving up. I look at my wt and measurement stats on my blog, the net result looks like I've made no progress the past 10 months. But I've learned so much! I exercise more, am learning to cook, discovering veggies more. That doesn't show because I've yet to permanently beat the addiction of binge-eating copious amounts of sugar. I'm learning what is not working. And patience.

Gina, patience in this journey is so important along with the learning! If you keep learning & don't give up, the journey is worth it!

Both great quotes. It's always so hard to keep these thoughts alive though -- that is harder work than squats and lunges super-setted. Staying motivated is the ultimate exercise.

I love the above quote. It reminds me of a similar one. I can't remember who said it, but it was the president of a company -- perhaps Henry Ford. When an employee made a very expensive mistake, the president was asked if he would be firing that employee. He responded, "Why would I do that, I just spent $X,XXX,XXX training him!"

Quotes are great tools to use to keep us motivated, help us out of a difficult patch, and feel better about ourselves. The Edison quote above is a great one to help build a better sense of perserverance. I have learned at least a couple of dozen ways not to lose weight, hopefully I have got this thing figured out now. So far so good.

Today my mantra is Responsibility 199, Gotta Do it!! With the single most inportant word in that mantra being "Do". It is not enough to want it, not enough to need it, not enough to try it. Until I DO it, the rest of the words there are alpha-bet soup and that is not a healthy soup.

Have a great day DOing it!

P.S. - a recent post of yours inspired my own post about my past today and I gave you a mention!!!

Well, with healthy living, or my attempts at it, I certainly am still plugging along and trying, despite "failures." Great quote.

The first time I heard a similar quote was in college during a problem-solving seminar. The professor told us, "If you want to have one great idea, come up with 100 ideas." Then he held up a goofy looking hook and asked us what we would do with it. We all started shouting out ideas which he wrote on the board, and after about 10 minutes he had a list of 40 or 50 things. I loved that lesson and used it often throughout my life....except....duh....when it came to my weight(unil about 5 years ago). Why I never thought of it as a solution to my weight problem still mystifies me. Instead, for years and years, I continued to do exactly the same thing that failed each time for me -- count calories, restrict foods, obsessively write down each mouthful of food -- my whole focus was always about food. Finally, I learned (and am still learning) that once I stopped obsessively making "all things food" the centerpiece of my existence, I began to regain control over my weight. What worked for me might not be right for others. We each may have to eliminate those 10,000 failures before hitting upon the one successful solution.

Second note, Jody...please don't give up in your quest to be a reader model. It sounds like something you want very much and you are such a great example and help to us that you should get it. How can we help you? The next time you submit, let us all know -- give us the address and we can blitz the magazine with letters on your behalf. Would that help? I would be so glad to do it to help repay the inspiration you continually give me.

Marsial, I love your story! The take away is that you never gave up & that you found what works for you.. the key.. what works for you!

Thank you so much for your comments on my "submissions" too. I am not sure if it is just my bod is not main stream enough.. maybe too much muscle or that they think I am "taking something". Just not sure.... Right now, I still consider trying & will think about your suggestion.. if I decide to try again, mentioning it on my blog......

      THX!!!!

PS: I would love to know the background of your name!

I have mixed feelings about this, and I'll try to explain. In my residency training, the head of the program used the Socrastic method and was always asking us questions to lead our thought process development. I remember one time when one of the residents answered, "I don't know." For some reason, my teacher's response stuck with me. He said, "That's a correct answer, but don't use it too often!"

Perhaps that doesn't relate, but I like the story

Funny! I think we all have the right to say I don't know during our lives. If we knew everything, we would all be perfect.. NOT!
