Bucket Lists, Dreams, Fear & More

Thursday September 2, 2010

I came upon this article which really got me thinking about our own personal dreams, hopes, visions & expectations of our lives and more. I know many of you out there have bucket lists & have posted about them. I don't have a list & never have really made one or started to make one. I do & have had dreams but that writing down the bucket list thing, have not done it.

I think for me, I don't want to be faced with the things I have not done or may never do. It is more a fear of being let down by my own expectations. I guess I could write a list that I know I could accomplish but that might turn out to be pretty boring... it would not push the envelope or limits which many people's bucket lists do... I almost think that the pics below are what we need to do - start living like a kid again when we dreamed & imagined & played. Is that the key? Go back before "life" took over????

Here is part of the article which in one part says this : I recently read a great book, 168 hours: You Have More Time Than You Think, and have been on a mission to reframe my use of time ever since. Let’s do a little math. We have 168 hours each week. If you sleep 9 hours per night and work a 50-hour work week, you have a little over 50 hours left of free time. Where is that going? Begin tracking it and you will be enlightened.

What’s On Your Bucket List - Part of the article below. Read the full article at the link.

Join the Peace Corp. Write a screenplay. Have any of these crossed your mind as something you’d like to do . . . when you have time? NOW is the time to get clear on what you want to see for yourself. You only have one life. Start living it.

A bucket list is a list of what you would like to be, see, do in your lifetime. Many of which you may already have completed!

Pour a cup of tea, light a candle, and pull out pen and paper. Take a few deep breaths and ask yourself, “What do I want to experience during my time on this earth?” This is a BIG question and one worth giving lots of space. Begin penning your dreams and be sure to include ones you’ve already accomplished. Let this list be a guide for how you choose to spend your 50ish free hours each week.

Here is a sampling of the author's list in no particular order:

sky dive – done
ride in hot air balloon
hike grand canyon – done
backpack through europe – done
dance in paris – done
pray in india
be a CNN hero
have high tea at the plaza eloise style
be on the today show
see an opera in NY – done
have a tiny cottage in the woods
run a half marathon
surfing lessons in hawaii – done
white water rafting – done
column in popular media
see moulin rouge – done
take golf lessons – done
don a hot pink sari
visit bali
have a rescue pet pig
safari in africa
get a PhD
host a tv show
donate one million dollars to charity
start a foundation – done
be on the cover of a magazine
be featured in a book – done
write a book – done
help end factory farming
write a best-seller
sun in greece – done
eat in italy – done
sleep in a castle – done
have a loving partnership – done
take a sabbatical
gondola ride in venice – done
snowboard in colorado – done
produce a film/documentary
design a clothing line – done
see orangutans + gorillas in their natural habitat
be a full-time philanthropist
play the harmonium
go on a sleigh ride – done
write a memoir

Do you have a bucket list? What to share some of it? If you don't have a bucket list, why & are you more a "things I dream to do" type of person?

Also coming back to health & fitness, this statement from above: We have 168 hours each week. If you sleep 9 hours per night and work a 50-hour work week, you have a little over 50 hours left of free time. Where is that going? Begin tracking it and you will be enlightened.

Can't you find some time in there to move more & eat better???

Also, have to thank DR. J again for the post yesterday!!!! If you missed it, a must read!

You bet I have a bucket list, it is here: http://responsibility199.blogspot.com/p/about-patrick.html?max-results=100

The authors list is cool if only for the fact that so many things on it are marked DONE. Having a list os one thing, DOING what is on the list is quite another.

My getting healthy is going to do so much to enable me to get after my list as a pace I never before have been able to.

No bucket list -- I was sick and in pain and fat so much of my life that the only two major things that would have been on my list were to get healthy and lose weight. I achieved the first (YAY) and am working on the second. I've squeezed in many fun and adventurous things along the way -- would have enjoyed them much more if I hadn't been so sick all the time. But I like your topic -- it has really caused me to think about my simple desires -- like looking reasonably good in a bathing suit again, learning Italizn, traveling to Australia and New Zealand, learning how to operate my new sewing machine (sigh!) -- guess I could come up with a list after all.

Marsial.... the fact that you are getting healthy is a wonderful thing! I love the simple desires statement you made.. I may go that way vs. a bucket list. THX!

Dreams are just dreams...Expectations can indeed hinder us or slow us down! I try to approach my dreams or goals with 1 added factor...OR SOMETHING BETTER...that leaves it wide open!

No specific list, but I do have dreams and a priority list to go with them. I spend part of each day working toward one or more of the dreams. (Tippy toe steps are better than none.)

I don't have a list. That seems to tie in with the fact that I don't know what I want to do with my life! Now or later, doesn't seem much to matter. Not sure why that is. Maybe because I am mostly content. Maybe because I was focused on my kids for so many years. I DO think about the trips I want to take when my nest empties next year

50 hours a week, and your choice how you spend it. It's quite sobering. My ideal is to decide what I want to focus in my life and spend those hours doing those things. But instead I find myself so often either wasting those hours or spending them chasing after things that really aren't that important to me. And then I complain that Idon't have any time....
