Operation Beautiful & Random Thoughts

So today was supposed to be a sexy shoulder post (sorry April) but I put it off till next week due to the post below. Also, yes, I have not got around to all the blogs the past couple days. Teeth were on the docket again & a couple other things so I hope to catch up tomorrow!

Not too long ago, I did a post linking to Operation Beautiful. The name of the post, Mean Words Will Not Make You Slim "The goal of the Operation Beautiful website is to end negative self-talk..... and help readers realize how truly toxic negative self-talk is — it hurts you emotionally, spiritually, and physically."

For those that have not heard yet, Caitlin Boyle, the founder of Operation Beautiful, was on The Today Show yesterday! You can view the interview, WHICH WAS AWESOME, at this link. This is how The Today Show website describes Caitlin & her blog and Operation Beautiful: "Blogger Caitlin Boyle is trying to start a revolution by spreading the word on positive body image, one Post-it note at a time, saying “a random message from a stranger can do a lot.”

How exciting is that.. And a book too! Caitlin posted about this on her site here & you can buy her book too. Click AT THIS LINK to read all the places you can buy it, links to where you can buy it & more about the book! What a wonderful thing to happen to a fellow blogger! A great person & a great message & I hope that she does well! She deserves it!!!!! Good things happening to good people!!!!

AND, Fit Chick in the City & some other bloggers headed to The Today Show outside crowd to support Caitlin. Check out the post here.

On the other end of the spectrum .... I need to rant. I know many of you out there have that guilty pleasure for all those Housewives & Jersey Shore shows. Me, not so much. AND NOW, a talk show with a bunch of the housewives & that crazy Michaele Salahi of crashing the White House party with her husband fame. To me, this says let's reward bad behavior with money! This is the norm these days. We have all those young stars like The Hills people & all the shows like that and Jersey Shore & whatever spinoff comes from that ... big bucks for nothing. Lindsey Lohan - an estimated $1M for a post jail interview among many other gigs & this from a gal that has no respect for the law & has been in more trouble that I care to count. In her defense, her parents are a mess but she is an adult now. Paris Hilton gallivanting around the world partying & getting paid for it. I guess I am either getting too old or I don't know what. I am just tired of seeing time after time, bad behavior rewarded with big bucks. We see this in sports figures too! Feel free to disagree with me but I had to get this off my chest!!!

I am just excited that a good person like Caitlin & Operation Beautiful got some TV time for a good cause & something that can really help people!!!!

Here are some of her Post-it Notes:

And one of her readers did this below:

So, what is your Operation Beautiful Post-it Note for the day? Have you been one that has posted notes out & about as part of Operation Beautiful? Please support this book & Caitlin. Let's show people that good things are rewarded too!

Heck, feel free to talk about your fav guilty pleasure TV show!!! We all need an escape. I have one soap opera I record every day & escape into that!

Pardon my honesty Jody -- for the most part, I think Operation Beautiful is just that -- beautiful. But deep inside me, I can not help but wonder if (some) women see this, and will use it as an excuse to not do more for themselves, that they may do more for those around them, hence my column today.

I was overseeing a half-dozen teenage girls last evening; friends of my fiancé's eldest daughter. They were all in bikinis in my jacuzzi and eating s'mores cooked over my fire pit.

Sounds innocent -- right up until the conversation turned to, "OMG, have as many as you want" referring to the s'mores. "It's not like you're going to get any fatter from an evening of marshmallows." true conversation.

the problem with the conversation? Every girl here was at least 30 pounds overweight -- with a bullet as the DJs once said.

Yes, they are all beautiful -- and they were all harming themselves.

Jody, where does beautiful stop, and self-mutilation or slow suicide begin...?

    It's so complicated.....

Roy, I hear what you & others are saying BUT I have to say that if I got more positive & "nicer" comments when I was young as a kid & then teen & then a young adult, I may have felt better about myself & that might have lead to me trying things I feared or doing things that might have been better for me because maybe those words would have been a good thing to push me on THEN ... Nothing is guaranteed but positive words towards others can help them feel better about themselves & thus give them that little push they need. Just my opinion.

I agree with Karen in that a word other than beautiful may have been nice but I took the word to be you are beautiful inside & out no matter what.... I guess we all take this differently.

I am sure Caitlin says positive things to people in person too....

All good points from everyone. THX!

"that crazy Michaele Salahi" came off just like that in her appearance on The View and then her post show shenanigans. On the show, she monopolized the conversation and, obviously, is a publicity addict. To me, she behaved like a conceited adolescent/brat/you know what. The other "Housewives" we just rolling their eyes. Whoopi knows how to deal with people like Michaele, that's for sure. (Too bad Whoopi didn't take the same approach towards Mel Gibson, imho).
I like the You Are Beautiful project, but Emergefit makes a good point.

I'll add to this - sometimes a compliment (in a non-threatening, non-creepy way) to a person goes a long way. Whether it be to compliment their weight loss, their new hair style, or even their cheery demeanor.

Please don't anyone shoot me for this... but I have too admit I was a bit troubled by the movement. (I saw the Today Show segment too.) My complaint is the focus on the word "beauty." I know, or I think, that the movement is about more than the external image and looks, and I know that beauty is a word that can describe more than that outside appearance, but for many, when they hear the word, that is what they think of first. I guess that I just wished, when I heard her great story, that it was called something else, like Operation Wonderful, or Strong, or Amazing, or Worthwhile... I am not in anyway saying I don't respect what she and others are doing and trying to accomplish. Just sharing what struck me when I first heard the concept and word.

Oh I have so many opinions! But first and foremost, why does it take an "operation" to be kind..not others AND ourselves!
Just like Random Acts of Kindness, I was paying tolls before it became the thing to do, I compliment people in the office on a daily basis! AND I agree with Karen..The focus on the word beauty. Again, our looks!
But that double edged sword...We don't follow the meaning of words from a dictionary, we follow them from our hearts and our experience...Instead of a post it note giving a compliment, in a random place, Randomly give compliments and post it, announce it with your SMILE!

When I saw that piece on the Today Show, part of my morning routine, the first thing I thought was, "I wonder if Jody's watching". I know you are a TS fan too. Wasn't that a great piece? I'm so glad that they featured it and I loved her story about how she came to start the project.

I think honest complimenting of others is a nice behavior to have!

To Roy: I guess one of the "advantages" of those girls not reading this site is that they missed the recent one Jody and I did on portion control and the "Campfire Giant Roasters marshmallows!"

I can't tell you how many times a compliment really got me thru a day! One day I was buying lunch for the hubby & went thru a drive thru window... yes, hubby eats FF but only on occasion these days.... anyway, the guy at the window complimented me on what a nice smile I had... out of the blue.. I am not a fan of my smile but he made my day!

      As for the other comment..

I do think people do have to embrace the journey of health at ALL sizes. But, we have to take the responsibility of taking care of our selves and truly loving our selves.

About these darn celebs, I really don't know when it is going to stop. I think the extreme is going to continue until we stop listening....

I tend to agree with Roy on this. It's okay to think you're beautiful but it's another to accept something that is less than healthy.

I also agree with your rant. I hate hearing about these spoiled people in particularly the celebrities that do NOTHING but party and get paid. Sheesh!
