To Do or Not To Do, That is the Question!!!

From Nourished Fitness

I saw this over at Nourished Fitness & had to share! So, what I really want to know is if you think it is necessary to absolutely love what you do?

Honestly, I think that the statement itself has a powerful message. I have a done a lot of things that were not what I really wanted to do & quite honestly, other parts of my life suffered because of it. On the other hand, I would not have been able to pay bills & eat.

On the other end of the spectrum, going after what you absolutely love will make you happier & they do say you will be more successful if you are working at a job that you absolutely love. I have also seen first hand how not doing what you really love or at least really like can lead to doing nothing at all.

In relation to fitness, I am not so sure. I have started doing things I was not thrilled about & ended up loving them, liking them, still doing them or even having them lead to new & even better fitness fun finds.

A VERY COMPLEX QUESTION which can go many ways in terms of comments to my question:

So, do you think you have to absolutely love what you do or run the risk of doing nothing?

AND

How do you feel about this question in relation to health & fitness VS. your "real job"?

What did you think of this article?

I get this a lot because I make my living in bare feet, work for myself, and have a lifestyle built around my job -- no, a job built around my lifestyle. People often suggest that I don't even have a job. Though there are times when it feels this way, there are also taxes, invoicing, insurance billing, etc.

I posses a law degree and make my living as a fitness trainer. At age 48, the trade of is the disparity of about 100k per year that I am not banking. What I get in exchange for that 100K is the freedom of my active lifestyle. At the end of the day though, it is still a job -- with good days and bad days, nice clients, and clients I would like to hit with 10 pound dumbbell just for showing up and wasting my time.

I have made the right choice, but I do question that choice every so often.

I think this might be a common story all around. I was not a lawyer BUT I did make some decent money & now broke... it is always a hard call when there are bills.

for me it is, now anyway, less the risk of doing nothing (especially with work gotta work) but more the risk of REBELLING or RESENTING.

neither of which are helpful or productive emotions.

Great question Jody. My husband and I just had this discussion with our son. Sometimes we have to do things we don't like, but in every job there can be an element that provides pleasure, you just have to find it. As far as fitness is concerned, there are so many forms that to say you hate them all means that you haven't looked hard enough.

I'm going to be the contraian here. I think dealing with discomfort and doing what you don't want to do is what often separates the successful person from the failure. I remember when back in college that first beautiful Spring when I put the time into my studies rather than the fun time I wanted to do, and it made all the difference in my improved grades and eventual MD.

I do not agree with the 'absolute' nayture of this statement. Sure, doing what one absolutely loves is a great goal. But, if you choose for whatever reason to do what you like allot are you doing nothing? No, you may not be doing as much as you could/would if you did what you have a passionate love for, but you are not doing absolutely nothing. Of course, thee word 'risk' is part of this statement which takes some of the sting out of its absolute nature. Now I am dissecting this too much.

I often don't love the things I do, but do them anyway out of a sense of obligation or necessity. When I was younger, I often suffered from inertia because I thought things through too much. My husband became my role model for getting things done -- he loves to be busy, and I learned from him that you just have to jump in and accomplish.
However, with regard to health and fitness, I like working out everyday, but would balk at having to be involved in fitness activities that I did not enjoy.

Honestly, I exercise every day and I rarely LOVE it. Some days I am having fun, like this past weekend biking in Minneapolis. Some days I am not having any fun. I think for me that is just the nature of the beast.

Now the real job part - I don't have one and I thought about going back to work a while ago and wanted to find something I would love. But I have no idea what that is! Cheryl, at http://losingmybehind.blogspot.com/ wrote a great post centered on this quote "Find something you love to do and you'll never have to work another day in your life!"

I think that Miz put it really well... it's not so much that I'm unlikely to DO something, but if I dislike it, then I'm liable to be resentful and then cranky etc. Better to do what we love and have that radiate from us.

I think you have to LOVE where you are headed...Figuring out how it all fits into the big plan, the scheme of things is what works for me. My real job..is necessary to pay the bills but mainly for me health benefits. Do I love it? NO! Lots of other things I would love to be doing. As far as health and fitness, I am finding that it is the same. There are things I like...the writing..and things I don't..the feeling of exercise...but I love the idea of where I am headed...
