Turkey Burger Recipes!!! Olive Oil - Some Important Info!

TGIF Friday, July 30, 2010

Before I start turkey burger talking, I have a couple things to tell you:

First, I am guest posting over at
Anonymous Fat Girl. The post will go live at 6am, Bobbie's time, which is EST, I THINK! Not sure so check back over there if it is not live yet. THX Bobbie!!!

Second, it turned out to be another teeth day yesterday so I was not able to visit a lot of blogs nor comment to your wonderful comments yesterday. As always, you have lots to say & offer to me & other readers!  THANK YOU!

Third, since this is recipe day, I wanted to remind you of the egg post last Friday. Well, I know many of you don't read blogs over the weekend but I had a really cute Saturday Funny with eggs as part of it so check it out if you want or need a smile!

OK, ON TO TURKEY BURGERS!!!!

I saw this recipe in Oxygen Women's Fitness. I am positive that many of you have already thought of this BUT I am not a cook so thinking outside the box in the cooking arena comes slow to me! I love this because I am too lazy to cut up all the veggies to put in my extra lean ground turkey so this is a great option for both turkey burgers & my turkey meatloaf! Being the lazy kitchen type & I know I am not gonna make my own salsa, I found a great on from Trader Joe's (TJ's), their Fire Roasted salsa! For 2 TBSP, it is only 10 calories & 30mg of sodium!

So, what am I talking about??? Ya mix the salsa into the extra lean turkey (the recipe says lean but I use extra lean). Then, ya top the burger with some more salsa! YUM! I have been topping my chicken breasts with the TJ's salsa since I read this recipe!!!

For Oxygen's recipe, they have a side of sweet potato chips (wrote about some microwave ones way back when from the GGS site) & a thin whole grain bun. You can always go open faced or eliminate the bun altogether if you want to cut down on calories or carbs. Also, season to your liking!

Also, if you missed my Monday post, check out the link in there. Each food swap from yesterday's post has a recipe if you go to the link & there are a few suggestions for the sweet potato fries which you may want to transfer over for these chips!

Here are the ingredients & directions & nutritionals. The recipe makes 2 servings & the nutrition breakdown is for one serving. Again, you can cut back on sodium by choosing wisely with your salsa like I did OR making your own. Also, again, bun or no bun, that is your choice. I KNOW, a play on words... but also can cut down on calories & carbs if you prefer.

Sorry, I was lazy & short of time so took pics of all the stuff below instead of typing it in. THX to Oxygen magazine!!!!

I also saw this turkey burger recipe over at GirlGetStrong if you want to try another one!!! Mix it up, just like the workouts!

So, anybody want to share a turkey burger recipe of their own???

ALSO, since this is a food post, I want to share a link to an article on extra virgin olive oil, a staple for many of us. We are NOT necessarily getting what we think we are buying!!!!

Part of the article:

"A study recently released by researchers at the University of California found that some olive oils labeled "extra virgin" are anything but: more than half of the imported oils tested in the study failed to meet international quality standards for extra virgin olive oil. Some of the oils had been degraded by improper storage or processing; others appeared to have been deliberately adulterated with cheaper, lower quality grades of olive oil."

Mixing salsa in with meat is a great way to pump up the meat. I've mixed it in with burgers and meatloaf as this post suggests. I have also rolled it in with spinach leaves in a pork or beef tenderloin pin-wheels. Salsa is anamazing condiment and compliment to meat; itis not just for putting on chips and chasing with cold beer. Well, that is fun too

Ok, off I go to AFG (one of my fave blogs) to see what you got cookin there.

    Thanks for the recipes!

I know I am in the minority, but I never add liquid oils to any meals I make.

PS CalorieLab seems to be working at this time

I found another great recipe for turkey burgers in a Rachael Ray cookbook. You add fennel, among other things, and it makes it taste a lot like sausage. My kids love sausage so they will eat turkey burgers if I make them like this. Win-win situation!

I'm off to check you out at Bobbie's.

I've never been a fan of turkey burgers, but I AM a fan of salsa.Maybe the combination of the two will be a winning combination for me. I'll give this a try next week! thanks!

Thanks for the link to the olive oil pdf -- very timely for me. I just purchased a new bottle of extra-virgin last week...didn't want to spend what they were asking for Bertolli (which the tests show rated as merely virgin), so I opted for the store brand which was more than 50% less expensive. Big mistake. Ugh! Definitely inferior. I'll use it for cooking. I printed out the page that rates all of the oils and I will take it with me on my next grocery outing so I can look for the brands that always tested extra-virgin. Thanks again.
