The Courage to Change

This is a great quote & certainly applies to weight loss. Those that have been reading me for a while know that if anyone asks me what I think are the top tips for losing weight & keeping it off, I will say: CONSISTENCY, FIND A PROGRAM BOTH FOOD & EXERCISE THAT YOU CAN LIVE WITH LONG TERM, AND....... PATIENCE!!!!

Too many people want the quick fixes or the easy way out & unfortunately most end up putting the weight on very quickly and even more weight once you stop the "easy way out or quick fix".

On the other end of things, I know many out there are familiar with yo-yo dieting - the putting on & taking off of weight multiple times after giving up or getting discouraged with a more traditional weight loss plan of eating healthier, eating less of calorie & fat dense foods (refined carbs & sugars) while replacing them with whole unprocessed food alternatives, veggies, lean mean & protein & healthy fats. Along with this, of course you have to START MOVING in some way or form.

What happens - NOT ENOUGH PATIENCE! People want results NOW. Well, this is not TV. You can't be airbrushed, you don't have the perfect body type or gene pool AND if it took a lot of time to put that weight on, why do you think it should come off in 2 weeks! The TRUTH - weight is going to come off a lot slower than it took to put it on and yes, the older you get, the harder it may become due to hormones & just the natural slowing of the body metabolism as we age.

YES, you can fight the aging by eating better, eating healthier, good protein choices (many women do not get enough protein as they are focused on salads only) & YES, healthy fats (they are needed!). I learned that the hard way by cutting out too much fat in my younger years. 

In addition to this, you have to get moving in some way. Plenty of options for moving & playing & exercise so I am sure you can find one or a few that you like & will do long term.. or like me, you may change it up along the way in terms of classes, sports & so forth. CHANGE IS GOOD, it helps to reduce repetitive sports injuries & keeps boredom out of the picture!

Of course, I must add in my beloved weight training or resistance training. The more muscle you have, the more calories you burn at rest. PLUS, it protects your body long term from injury & osteoporosis. For women, you will always hear this suggestion as part of the "help process" for the aging & slowing metabolism as we hit perimenopause & menopause.

SO - GET YOUR PATIENCE ON!!!! With that, the unreachable becomes reachable, the unavailable become available, the unattainable...attainable." Have the patience and you will be smiling in the end!

So, tell us, has patience been one of the things that has tripped you up in the past? Have you gotten past it & if yes, what helped you get past it?

    I am not a patient person in any aspect of my life! But I have learned that for me, weight comes off very, very slowly. I don't like it, I am sometimes frustrated by it, but I guess I have accepted it. But for me, the yo-yo part is not related to patience or lack thereof. It is more about habit. And that I always in the past "went on a diet" rather than changed my eating habits to something I could live with long-term. And I started back again with bad habits. And eating what I used to eat. No surprise that I regained weight time and time again.

Being a somewhat of a skeptic, I wasn't bowled over by the opening quote. But your very pragmatic, sound advice is wonderful. Except....you mean...when I get slimmer, all of my wrinkles and other signs of aging won't be airbrushed away?? Sigh. I was so hopeful. As to your question, no, I am a very patient person so lack of patience has not been the thing that has ever tripped me up.

    A (slight) observation I have is this, that I gather from what I have seen around me, that patience is a trait learned early in life. Those who try and learn patience as adults -- not so successful.

    So parents, teach your children well, and teach them patience early....
