Team Sarcoma 2010 - Work Out & Help Fight Cancer!

I have posted a lot about Sarcoma and the fact that my mom passed away from this cancer in November of 2006. Each year I post about the one week International Team Sarcoma Initiative taking place around the world. The 2010 Team Sarcoma Initiative this year will be July 17-25, 2010 and events from running, walking & bike riding will be taking place here in the United States & all over the world!!!!
For a list of where these events are in case you want to join, check out THIS LINK.
The hope is to bring together more than 20,000 people around the world for the 2010 Team Sarcoma Initiative. You can help us spread the word and reach this goal! Just share these resources with your community AND JOIN AN EVENT IF YOU CAN!

Those of you that have either battled or know someone that has battled cancer, it is beyond tough going! There are no words. Even more so, rare cancers DO NOT get the funding that the more known cancers get so they need our help even more.
Again for those that have visited before, you know that my mom passed away from liposarcoma, one of over 50 subtypes of Sarcoma. You can see The Faces of Sarcoma at this link and see all the ages, genders, races and nationalities that this cancer hits. It hits EVERYONE!

The “Sarcoma Knows No Borders” Facebook Event
Worldwide – On Facebook
July 17-25, 2010
People around the world will be gathering to celebrate International Sarcoma Awareness Week from July 17-25, 2010. Even if you can’t attend an event in person, you are invited to attend this online event.
The purpose of the event is to join together with others online and have fun. You don’t need to wax poetic, tell your life story, or give a lecture. Just choose to do a couple of fun things with us on Facebook! Your participation will help us involve 20,000 people in our largest effort ever.
There are four different ways to participate in this event. Choose at least two – and RSVP before July 25th!
- Option 1: Take a fun photo and share it
- Option 2: Play with words in your status message
- Option 3: Donate your profile picture
- Option 4: Comment on and share our Event Graphic
Learn more and RSVP to be counted on the Facebook Event page!
I know times are tough but if you are not giving to another cause or can afford to help out, it would be greatly appreciated by all of us. Just posting the Facebook link on your own FB page will bring awareness to this deadly cancer. Thank you!
PS: If you want to go OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE:
David Bradley, who is a liposarcoma patient, is heading up a small group of ultra marathon bicycle racers called Team Raven Lunatics who are devoting their efforts to increasing sarcoma awareness and raising funds for sarcoma research.
They will be participating in three amazing events. If you are in the area for any of them please come out and cheer them on! Wait till you read about these events which are taking place in Washington, Oregon, and California (see the Team Raven Lunatics announcement at http://bit.ly/9SXLwV).
July 17-18: Seattle to Portland 200 mile bike ride (STP). Every year approximately 10,000 cyclist ride from Seattle to Portland, taking either one or two days to complete the 200 mile distance. David Bradley, a Northern California ultra cyclist and a liposarcoma patient at MD Anderson, will be taking part in the weekend fun as part of Team Raven Lunatics. This event is a fully supported cycling event that goes beyond the level of the casual bike ride. David will be joined by a number of his ultra cycling friends for the event.
July 24-25: Race Across Oregon (RAO). RAO is a 534-mile, non-stop bicycle race that starts in Hood River on the flanks of Mt. Hood and completes a loop through the eastern Oregon high desert. Participants compete non-stop and must finish the grueling race in a 48 hour time cut off. The race is on open roads with vehicle support and crew support. Racing for Team Raven Lunatics will be Dennis Johnson and supported in the crew vehicle by David Bradley, William Spaeth, and Sharon Stevens (all ultra racers). RAO is an epic race though truly scenic country. The race is so tough that only about 50% of the solo entries are able to finish the race.
October 2-3: Furnace Creek 508. This event is a 508 mile race that starts in Santa Clarita, CA, just north of Los Angeles. The race travels through the Antelope Desert, Death Valley National Park, and the Mojave Desert finishing in Twenty Nine Palms, CA. Team Bacchetta Raven Lunatics will be a four person recumbent bicycle team that plans on setting a very fast four person relay team record. The time cut off for teams is 46 hours and, like the solos, the race continues non-stop. Team Raven Lunatics will be comprised of David Bradley, Jim Kern, John Schlitter, and William Spaeth. Sandy Earl will provide crew support for the four racers. By the way, Sandy will be competing this June in Race Across America (a 3000 mile 11 day odyssey) as the first ever solo female to attempt the race on a recumbent bicycle. Sandy, of course, will be sporting Team Sarcoma logos on her support vehicles.

Jody, thanks go out to you for what you do to spread cancer awareness. I checked out the links, no events in my area unfortunately. But as a cancer survivor, I'm more than willing to help. We have a select short list of charities we support and some are of course cancer related. The sarcomahelp.org site has a contribute via paypal option so we'll make our next planned contribution to sarcomahelp.org instead.
Keep on making a difference!

Even in medical school as a younger man, it was frightening to learn about this disease. My thoughts are with every family who has to face this tragedy.
