Weight Loss Tips

The picture  above comes from Lori's site, Finding Radiance. I know we all have many ways we choose to lose weight and eat and maintain. For me, I have used portion control, measuring out my food & knowing the approximate amount of calories I eat.

Now saying that, today, I really do not log & get all my specifics of calories per day. Also, for foods I already eat, I have measured & portioned them in the past so I know what a portion size is for me now. Any new food I add in, I do measure & portion it out at first until I know what that portion looks like & then I stop. I rely on knowing what a portion size is FOR ME. Yes, things like my treat healthy animal cookies, I measure out a portion at night, put them on a plate, put the container back & eat my portion size.

Now, I know many of you out there are intuitive eaters & I am not saying anything is wrong with that. We all have to do what is right for us & works for us. Lori is even taking a stab at IE/ME as she calls it. She wrote about that AFTER I had put this post together.... and then again here. Good thing I checked before I posted this!

BUT, for those that are on no real program of intuitive eating OR portion control, let me quote from Lori about the above picture: It’s amazing that those chips are 70 calories.  It is so, so easy to overeat on chocolate.

It is actually easy to overeat on anything food that one likes, me included! If you are having trouble losing weight or breaking a plateau, I urge you to think about this picture & Lori's words above.

Statistics show that people think they eat less than they actually do!

I have posted this many times but take a look again at my challenge post How Much Are You Eating? It says a lot! AND there is always Dr. J's Do the Math!

I also wanted to share this article because we all know that sleep is proven to be connected to our weight loss goals. Check out this article on how to Choose the Best Mattress for a Good Night of Sleep from WebMD.

Do you use portion control/measuring or intuitive eating to help you lose weight? If neither, what do you do?

What type of mattress are you sleeping on? Mine is a bit too old!

What did you think of this article?

Well, as you know from reading my blog over the weekend, I "just eat". I suppose some may call it "intuitive eating"...but I didn't read about it in a book, or see it on tv when I started...it's just how my hubby and I have eaten for years...with the exception of comp prep-that is absolute calorie counting and carb cycling to the Nth degree...LOL
    And yeah-those choc chips don't take long to add up...if you're counting...LOL

Agree with Rachelle, it's intuitive for me after all these years. I still write it down at the end of the day to keep it real, but I know what's right, and I know what's wrong.

I sleep on the floor for nearly 15 years. Recently moved in with Fiancé and began be sleeping. Doesn't matter, I sleep like crap no matter where I lay my head.

As my mom always said, "nobody ever died from a lack of sleep."

I'm not a fan of keeping track - in my mind it puts too much emphasis on food which I don't like. However, just yesterday I weighed and got a measurement of my bf% and was thrown for a loop (although I am convinced that there were extenuating circumstances - I gained 1 kilo and bf% increased by over 3% - not possible for me! I take my workouts seriously so it's not like I'm just phoning it in.).

Anyway, my trainer was not listening to any of my reasons/explanations/BS and he's pushing me to see a nutritionist to help with my diet. After thinking about it for the evening, I decided that I should go - I've got various goals lined up for the next 2-3 years and it would be crazy to not work on my nutrition as hard as I work on everything else. So it's all going to be written down. Bleh.

As for sleep - this is critical for me - I am starting to track this stat as well. Despite a previous comment, while I don't think anyone actually dies from lack of sleep, I think it effects performance and again, why work so hard to try and achieve something when another aspect of your life is working against that goal?

Even though I'm gonna be 47 this year, and no one could ever look at me and say athlete, I'm working hard to achieve my goals so I've decided that everything counts.

I always resort to calorie counting when I feel that my portions are getting out of control. It works like a charm for me. I see when I'm eating, if I'm eating too much or too little. I just started counting yesterday as my schedule had changed and I felt like all I want to eat is ice cream in this heat. =)

    Couldn't agree more about sleep!

While I don't measure my food, I do look at suggested serving sizes on labels and eyeball my portions to see if they seem correct. Where I get into trouble is when I eat directly from a package. I have some small ramekins that I use if I'm going to have a serving of crackers or pretzels. These are things I could easily overeat.

One of the benefits of the South Beach diet is that you don't need to count calories or carbs or anything. BUT you are supposed to eat normal portions. I do what you do - the first time I eat a food that I am likely to misjudge, like cereal or crackers, I make sure I know the actual portion size. I read a lot of blogs about intuitive eating but am pretty sure that would not work for me.

Myself I am an IE... for years of trial and error on dieting I have learned what portion sizes should be and the general energy make up of what I am eating. So I wing it. But, if you don't have that knowledge and sense about food, then ME all the way is great advice. From time to time I will measure stuff and record calories and energy for a day just to check myself. Even though I believe I have a sense of what I am eating, I know full well what you have shared here in that we think we eat less than we actually do. That can be so true if we aren't at least thinking intently about it when we are eating or if needed measuring it out.

As for mattress, I'd have to check to see what we have. So I'll get back to you on that.

Portion control is my best friend! Once I learned what's what with the calorie thing I could apply portion control effectively. I also apply high voluming, low calorie density to "fill me up."

Water bed user here. Not the old time kind. They make them much better now

GREAT post Jody! I find that when I track or count or rely on numbers, I become consumed. Intuitive eating is a great concept, but for me..my intuition in the food arena needs to develop a little more. My definition of intuitive is to pay attention to the signals and signs. My signals and signs when it comes to food are VERY out of whack. So, I try to be attentive and acknowledge each choice I put in my mouth and listen to my intuition about my thoughts at that moment. Difficult to do, but its what helps me.

    Now I want chocolate LOL!

While I am trying to mindful eat this month, I do still weigh and measure. I really have a problem with putting out too big portion sizes, even after all this time, so I really have to keep a check on that. Hence that photo above and its comment.

I have a pillow top mattress and not sure I would recommend. I miss my waterbed, I have to say!
