What is "Your Way"?

"It’s tragic that people sacrifice the real goal of life, which is increasing joy and happiness, for the cold comfort of judging others and feeing superior to them. If you see the world with judgment instead of love, that’s the world you will inhabit."
I saw this great short article & wanted to share it with you BUT I also want to talk a bit before that because the title & picture had me thinking about how this relates to health & fitness.
We all read a lot of blogs & hear the stories of the many ways people have tried to lose weight. All the diets, programs, crazy diets, devices, low fat, low carb, high protein, raw food, vegetarian and more. Is there any right way???
No, we do NOT want to fall for the crazy ones out there, that is a fact, BUT who is to say that people can't lose weight on many of the very different healthy programs out there.. or even a program you set up for yourself.
Me, I have done a lot of things wrong in my early years (see the AFG Guest Post) but now I rely on eating whole foods, minimally processed foods, can't remember the last time I had a frozen dinner, few packaged foods & if they are in my house, the ingredient list is short & I can pronounce all the ingredients!
I probably eat about a 40-30-30 type program... meaning my % of calories from my food are about 40% carbohydrate, 30% protein and 30% fat. Now this varies & sometimes I may have more or less carbs or protein and I don't always eat as high as 30% fat. This is just a guess based on what I know I eat day to day. This works for me, but it may not work for others. I think there are many out there that eat like this but I also know those that eat a higher protein diet & that works for them. Some eat a very high carbohydrate rich diet of healthy foods & they do better that way.
I think we all have heard of the Mediterranean diet (which is NOT a diet but a lifestyle way of eating for long term) that seems to prove out as a healthy diet for a lot of people... similar to the 40-30-30 type breakdown, BUT there are exceptions to every rule. There is no "my way or the highway" OR as the pic above says, MY WAY OR NO WAY, with healthy eating & exercising. Well, unless you have medical issues & your doctors tell you to eat a certain way to stay alive!!!
It is all about a lifestyle change and finding a well rounded food & exercise program that you can live with long term. As I have said in the past, my food & exercise has changed over the years BUT it is always because I knew I needed the change & again, I put together a plan that I could live & be happy with day to day. My plan now may change a bit here & there again but it is all about working to find the right thing for me.
Check out the article below. It has a lot to say about life in general.. not necessarily health/fitness. I really liked it! Here is the last paragraph (seen above also) which may entice you to read the entire short article: "It’s tragic that people sacrifice the real goal of life, which is increasing joy and happiness, for the cold comfort of judging others and feeing superior to them. If you see the world with judgment instead of love, that’s the world you will inhabit."
Imposing Your Viewpoint
Most people are trapped trying to impose their viewpoint on the world. They carry around beliefs about what is right and wrong, and they hold on to these beliefs for years.
“I am right” brings comfort, but not true happiness. The people you feel wronged by will never apologize and make your wounds and grievances go away. The people you judge against will remain isolated from you. No one has ever been made happy by proving that they are right. The only result is conflict and confrontation, because the need to be right always makes someone else wrong.
There is no such thing as one and only one correct perspective. Right is whatever conforms to your perception. You see the world as you are. Others see the world as they are, too. This insight is tremendously liberating because, first of all, it makes you unique. Ultimately it makes you a cocreator with God. For as your consciousness expands, so does reality. Tremendous hidden potential is revealed.
The opposite happens if you insist upon being right. Because others will disagree, your need to be right will generate antagonism and rejection. As we are all too sadly aware, if the need to be right is rigid and fierce enough, wars ensue, often in the name of God.
If the world is a mirror of who you are, it is always reflecting a point of view. Objectivity is an illusion of the ego, created to bolster its insistence that what it sees is right.
It’s tragic that people sacrifice the real goal of life, which is increasing joy and happiness, for the cold comfort of judging others and feeing superior to them. If you see the world with judgment instead of love, that’s the world you will inhabit.

Wow, this post hits home Jody. I had a conflict with a family member this week and realized that she is just a mirror for me. It is powerful to shift gears and not have to express my oppinon or "be right"

So true. I wish I had a nickel for every time I heard, "You can't lose weight eating like that!" while I was losing weight.

I have tried a lot of plans in my day. It takes trial and error to find the right way to eat to satisfy your body and your goals. And even now as I age I continue to make adjustments. It's all part of the journey!

Too often I want to be right. I want to control things. Thanks for the reminder that I am only hurting myself when I act and feel this way. I remember one of my favorite Dr. Philisms - "Do you want to be right or do you you want to be happy?"

Jody, I think you have been around me long enough to know that I totally agree with this. We all have to find the plan that not only works, but that we can stick with. This is a lifestyle change. If it was just a diet, we could do anything for a month or two, but it is more than that.

I agree with the notion that there isn't just one way to achieve health/fitness. I do think that most healthy programs have similar components like plenty of exercise and a good variety of healthy foods. I know I've been guilty of judging some programs that seem a little out there because it concerns me that people are being tricked for the sake of a buck.

Life isn't black and white, and we seem to feel the need to view it that way. I had someone tell me I wouldn't lose weight eating bagels because they were so full of carbs. And this was after I lost 100 pounds. Gotta love it.

YES! BC perimenopause, I had a bagel every single day - 7 days a week!!! As my bod changed, I started reducing my bagels but the change of life is a whole different beast. Of course you can loose weight & eat them. It is all in how you plan your program. Good for you Lori!
I still eat bread, but different kinds. Some people will not eat bread but life without bread for me is NO GOOD!

Yes, life is all about choices and making the right ones. Different medicine works for different people, just like food. You have to pick what works for you.

I have recently learned this. Not just for health and weight loss, but in my whole life. My grandmother is very judgemental and while loving to her family, some of her treatment of others is toxic. My mother is better but it still rears its head. I am working on becoming less judgemental because I have discovered it provides only "cold comfort". Being kinder and more accepting has provided me with more friends and an inner peace that is wonderful.

I think what is most important here is to understand that we all evolve and our values change as we get older. Muhammad Ali said, "Show me a man who has the same values at 50 as he had at 25, and I'll show you a man who has wasted 25 years of his life."
For years I wanted to control every aspect of my client's lives, knowing that my way was the best way for them.
As I have gotten older, my ears now work better and I tend to let them stay closer to their path than my own.
That said, and eluding to Karen's response, though there are certainly differences from body to body, essentially, we are all made out of the same stuff, and off the shelf, we should all respond (fairly) similarly to the same protocols.
Food for thought Miss Jody....
