Holiday Diet /Fitness Help; Lettuce Recall

TGIF Friday May 28 2010

Happy memorial Day weekend to all! I hope you have some fun & relaxation planned! I know some like to just enjoy on a holiday & not worry too much about things. I tend to be different in that regard. I still stick to my exercise routine OR if I am somewhere away, I still try to find ways to exercise or just MOVE. I also don't let my eating habits get all out of whack. I still tend to eat my healthy way & if I have an event or family gathering or party to go to, I PLAN for it & know what I will or will not be splurging on. I am not one to just let go for a whole day or non stop. I usually end up feeling pretty bad after in terms of my tummy not liking that. SO, being one that enjoys the sweet stuff more, I eat my healthy foods, try not to over eat & then decide what sweet I want to splurge on. No different than my enjoyment of my weekend cookies!

I thought I would offer up a few older posts that may help you thru this mind field called holiday eating!

First: Holiday Exercise Help. Lots of info including another link to this good post about beating the need for New Year's Resolutions. Some really good points in this one.

Second one: Memorial Day - Plan and Play. Even more good points & links to another post about 6 Diet Destructors. I think between all these, you will find something that will help you thru the parties, BBQ's and family fun!

Third: On my local news station, a story on healthy recipes for a BBQ. This was the healthy stats vs. a traditional menu and if you click on the previous link, you will get all the details AND RECIPES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Meal totals:

Christine Avanti's Beach Body BBQ: 530 calories, 12 grams of fat

Traditional Backyard BBQ: 1,528 calories, 93 grams of fat

Also, off my Oxygen magazine "e" newsletter, a recipe for your holiday weekend!

In the June issue of Oxygen, you discovered how tropical fruits can boost your gains at the gym by providing energy for muscle repair. Here’s a delicious recipe for watermelon salsa that goes well on top of whitefish – a perfect postworkout combo!

Taste of the tropics

Chunky Watermelon Salsa

Ready in 10 minutes •
Makes 2 Servings

2 cups diced watermelon
1 cup peeled, diced cucumber
1/4 cup sliced green onions
2 tbsp minced fresh cilantro
2 tsp minced, seeded jalapeño pepper
Juice of 1 lime

Combine all ingredients in a bowl.

Recipe provided by Nanci S. Guest, MSc, RD

NUTRIENTS PER SERVING:

Calories: 60, Total Fats: 0 g, Saturated Fat: 0 g, Trans Fat: 0 g, Cholesterol: 0 mg, Sodium: 10 mg, Total Carbohydrates: 16 g, Dietary Fiber: 16 g, Sugars: 11 g, Protein: 2 g, Iron: 1 mg

I can find more things to put that on than fish!

AND, there was another lettuce recall & I know people make salads for the holiday. Check the FDA site about it here!

I will have a couple short & fun posts this weekend but I know you may not get to them if you are unplugged. Had to mention just in case .. ENJOY!

Love that card about the families! I tend to "splurge" a little more than usual on the holidays and the weekends, but I try not to throw all caution to the wind. I cannot wait to try the watermelon salsa - anything that has watermelon, jalapenos, and cilantro has to be good.

I generally just roll with it on holidays. This is one of those that shouldn't involve too much in the way of food drama, and lots of opportunity for exercise. (Which I just jinxed by mentioning it. )

    Have a happy holiday weekend!

Jody, I will survive the holiday foods that will be present. I will exercise twice over this three day weekend. I will enjoy myself more doing so than in holidays past where the enjoyment revolved around food.

    Have a Great Weekend!!

Thanks for all the suggestions Jody. I have two cookouts to go to this weekend and could use some ideas for dishes to bring. The watermelon salsa sounds so refreshing.

I saw that lettuce recall. I tell you the truth - it makes me nervous to eat salads sometimes because you just don't know where they came from!

    We are resting and relaxing.

Would have never thought about watermelon salsa--sounds absolutely delicious and I'll be trying it!

I'll be playing/exercising outside this weekend!

Also, please keep the troops, vet, and their loved ones in your thoughts and/or prayers this weekend and every day.
